Porn producers eyeing Google's Project Glass for POV films

Hey, you knew this was going to happen, right? The adage rings true: A tech product isn't really successful until the porn industry, erm, hops on it. And while Google's Project Glass -- that space-age monocle that shoots video as well as brings info to eyeball level -- won't be available publicly for a couple of years, the adult industry is already licking its chops over the, erm, practical value of Project Glass, particularly for point-of-view (aka POV) scenes.

Pink Visual's Quentin Boyer told PCMag that "a device that allows you to shoot high quality video in a truly hands-free fashion will make shooting POV porn that much easier." A spokesperson for MiKandi, which provides a sort of porn portal in the form of an Android app, told industry pub XBIZ "we're already dreaming up ways to use the glasses to get shots (sex-related and otherwise) that just aren't feasible using a traditional camera setup."

As for us? We're just hoping we don't end up seeing the point of view shots of the bottom of a Cheetos bag with all the nerds that'll be playing with this thing. Here's to the future.

2nd round of storms cuts power for more Ohioans

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? When the lights began flickering during another bout of thunderstorms, Leo Welsh braced himself for his second power outage in three days and decided there was no point in getting upset.

The first outage at his Columbus home followed winds of up to 80 mph on Friday. While other Ohio residents were told they might be in the dark for days, Welsh's outage lasted about 20 hours.

The second round of storms Sunday knocked out the lights throughout his neighborhood, including the ones that had remained on at the house next door, and Welsh figured it must be his turn to wait. So he packed the food from his refrigerator ? plus the food his mother-in-law had brought over when her power went out ? carted it to his brother's place in Grandview and patiently addressed his 3-year-old son's questions about when someone might be coming by to fix the TV.

"Getting worked up about it is not going to make the power come on any sooner," said Welsh, 33, a nursing home administrator. Still, he was repeatedly dialing home on Monday, hoping to hear the sweet sound of the answering machine indicating his electricity was back. By lunchtime, there was still no answer.

The Sunday storms expanded the outage lists by the thousands, including some Ohio homes and businesses where power already had been lost and restored. About 445,000 Ohio customers ? mostly of American Electric Power Co.? were without power at midday Monday, and residents were scrambling to stay cool as temperatures climbed into the 90s.

Dayton Power and Light planned free ice giveaways to help some of its 17,000 affected customers. Duke Energy Corp. had more than 8,000 customers out.

Federal and state officials and relief workers were trying to determine the biggest and most urgent needs. The Ohio Emergency Management Agency said it was fielding dozens of calls from people who mistakenly thought state and federal officials were offering access to generators for personal use. The agency was redirecting those callers to local 211 hotlines and the American Red Cross for information about cooling shelters.

Gov. John Kasich declared a state emergency during the weekend, called out the National Guard and sought help from President Barack Obama, who declared a federal emergency in Ohio. Federal aid trucks carrying water were sent to six distribution points in southern and eastern Ohio.

About 200 National Guard members were going door-to-door in the Columbus and Dayton areas Monday to check on residents who might need help. Columbus planned to open fire hydrants at four spots Monday afternoon to help residents cool off.

AEP said Friday's storm was Ohio's worst since the state was battered in 2008 by the remnants of Hurricane Ike. Out-of-state reinforcements were limited by big needs in the Washington, D.C., area and neighboring states that were also hit by storms.

In the meantime, many people visited friends and family to enjoy some air conditioning and to charge their cellphones and laptops.

The flashlights that Natalie Driscoll's family bought after the first outage proved useful Sunday when storms cut the electricity again at her home near Springfield.

"My 2-year-old thought it was kind of fun at first," Driscoll said. "She got to play with the new flashlights."

With their power not expected to return before Tuesday evening, Driscoll packed two coolers with food from her refrigerator and freezer and took her two young daughters to stay with her parents in Upper Sandusky, a two-hour drive away. Her husband stayed at home, where Friday's storm had torn the top off their tall pine tree and left it in their yard.

"It looked like somebody pulled a Christmas tree down and laid it in our yard, instead of putting it by the curb," said Driscoll, 28.

In southeast Ohio, more than half of Wayne National Forest was closed to the public and some visitors were asked to leave recreation areas as a precaution while park workers inspected trails for fallen trees and other damage.

Ohio officials confirmed one storm death. A 70-year-old woman died Friday evening in Muskingum County when a barn collapsed after she had gone to check on animals during the storm.

State Treasurer Josh Mandel said small business owners, farmers and other Ohioans might be eligible for interest rate reductions on loans to recover or rebuild from the storm damage. He said he's made $25 million available through the state's Renew Ohio & Rebuild Ohio emergency financing programs.

Space station trio gets back down to Earth

After half a year living on the International Space Station, three astronauts safely returned to Earth on Sunday aboard a Russian-built space capsule.

The Soyuz spacecraft landed in the Central Asian steppes of Kazakhstan at 4:14 a.m. ET, returning NASA astronaut Don Pettit, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Dutch astronaut Andre Kuipers to their home planet.

"Everything is good, we feel great," Kononenko radioed Russia's Mission Control Center just before landing.

The spacefliers undocked from the space station several hours earlier in their Soyuz TMA-03M spacecraft to begin the journey home. They landed upright under a blue sky dotted with some white clouds in Kazakhstan, where the local time was Sunday afternoon. Live video tracked the Soyuz's descent at the end of its parachute, right down to the ground.

Veterans return from frontier
Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers arrived at the orbiting outpost in December 2011. All three had flown previous missions to the space station, making them a crew of veteran spacefliers.

In a blog post describing his final day in space, Pettit reflected on the impact of his months-long mission, and encouraged humanity to keep pushing the boundaries of space exploration.

"On Earth, the frontiers opened slowly," Pettit wrote. "The technology of sailing was known and advanced for over a thousand years before the Earth was circumnavigated. Such bold acts require the technology, the will, and the audacity to explore. Sometimes you have one, but not the others. I only hope that my small efforts here, perhaps adding one grain of sand to the beach of knowledge, will help enable a generation of people in the future to call space 'home.'" Throughout their mission, Pettit and Kuipers shared stunning photos of Earth from space with the public through Twitter and the Flickr photo-sharing site. Pettit also regularly updated his blog with accounts of his experiences on the space station, including several poems in tribute to life in space.

Pettit kept a journal as a fun way to document his scientific activities on the orbiting outpost. For instance, Pettit wrote blog updates using the persona of a zucchini plant when he experimented with growing different kinds of plants in microgravity.

On Friday, Pettit wrote a poem called "Last Day in Space," touching upon his memories of the mission, the experiences that moved him, and his anticipation over seeing his wife and children again soon.

Milestone mission
Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers made up half of the station's Expedition 31 crew. During their stay at the orbiting laboratory, the spacefliers rolled out the welcome mat for the first commercial spacecraft to visit the station.

SpaceX's unmanned Dragon capsule was launched to the International Space Station on a test flight to demonstrate the spacecraft's ability to carry cargo to and from low-Earth orbit. As Dragon approached the station, Pettit and Kuipers used the outpost's robotic arm to pluck it from space and manually park it to the complex.

The successful test flight lays the groundwork for NASA to use commercial spaceships to ferry cargo ? and one day, astronauts ? to the space station. SpaceX holds a $1.6 billion contract with the agency for 12 unmanned cargo delivery flights.

Kononenko served as commander of Expedition 31 during his stay, but passed the torch to fellow Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka during a change-of-command ceremony Saturday.

The departure of Pettit, Kononenko and Kuipers leaves only three residents occupying the space station until three new crewmembers launch to the complex on July 14. Padalka, NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Revin will remain aboard the orbiting outpost until September.

Russian space station flight controllers radioed Padalka and his Expedition 32 crew after Sunday's landing to let the spacefliers know their comrades were back on Earth and in good health.

"Good to hear," Padalka radioed back. "Another mission completed."

Spain: No regrets for not eliminating Italy

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -Two weeks ago, long before either team had earned a spot in the final, Spain had a chance to eliminate Italy from the European Championship.

In the final round of group matches, Spain played Croatia knowing that a 2-2 draw would send both teams to the quarterfinals - and send Italy home early for the third straight time at a major championship.

It didn't happen, and now it is Italy that will be trying to stop Spain from winning its third straight major championship on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.

"We'll never regret not having drawn with Croatia to eliminate Italy," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque said. "That wouldn't have been good for the sport."

Xavi Hernandez, the man in the middle of Spain's attack, said Saturday that the world champions did what they were supposed to do against Croatia: win the match and the group.

"We did our job in the group stage despite all the speculation about a 2-2 draw leaving Italy out," Xavi said. "We'll never remember that, win or lose tomorrow, we could have eliminated Italy already."

The Italians will head into Sunday's match as an unexpected finalist but looking very much like the kind of team that can finally knock Spain off its perch at the top of the football world.

In their opening Group C match, Italy held the defending champions to a 1-1 draw. Antonio Di Natale scored first, but Cesc Fabregas equalized in a game in which the Azzurri looked more similar to Spain than to the stereotype of a defensive Italian team.

"Italy and ourselves have come through a similar route and now we have to reach the maximum level that a final will require," Del Bosque said. "In the group stage match, they were possibly better than us in the first half. They were the team that caused us the most problems."

Even if the route was similar, Italy's path may have been more impressive.

They played needing a win against Ireland, at the same time that Spain turned in a 1-0 victory over the Croats on June 18, putting both through. The Italians then struggled to finish against England in the quarterfinals but still advanced by winning a penalty shootout after a 0-0 draw.

It wasn't until the semifinals against Germany that Italy really showed its strength, controlling play throughout the match and holding on to beat the three-time champions 2-1 with two goals from striker Mario Balotelli.

"I am convinced that a team needs to have a specific system and style of play. He was part of this strategy," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said of Balotelli. "He made lots of forward runs, he was a target up front when we had to counterattack, and therefore he played a great match."

The Spanish had less trouble against France in the quarterfinals, but their finishing then seemed to go fishing for the semifinal match against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. Spain needed penalties to get through that one.

"Sure, our attack may not have been as aesthetically pleasing to watch as we would have liked, but we were always in control of all of our matches," Del Bosque said.

So heading into Sunday's match, it's the Italians who are scoring more goals, leaving the Spanish to worry about the back line when the superstar midfield loses the ball.

If the superstar midfield, which has been the key to Spain's titles at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup, does lose the ball.

"(Our defensive) work has been fundamental to our game plan, especially in the last few games where our back line was always there when it needed to be," Spain defender Sergio Ramos said. "We're proud that our work is being valued and hopefully we don't concede a goal in the final because that would be the ultimate compliment to our work."
