Physicists explain the collective motion of particles called fermions

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Some people like company. Others prefer to be alone. The same holds true for the particles that constitute the matter around us: Some, called bosons, like to act in unison with others. Others, called fermions, have a mind of their own.

Different as they are, both species can show "collective" behavior -- an effect similar to the wave at a baseball game, where all spectators carry out the same motion regardless of whether they like each other.

Scientists generally believed that such collective behavior, while commonplace for bosons, only appeared in fermions moving in unison at very long wavelengths. Now, however, collective behavior has been discovered at short wavelengths in one Fermi system, helium-3.

A team led by Professor Eckhard Krotscheck -- a physicist who recently joined the University at Buffalo from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria -- predicted the existence of the behavior using theoretical tools. Independently, but practically at the same time, a French team observed the collective behavior.

A paper detailing both the theoretical and experimental discoveries appeared in the journal Nature on March 29.

Krotscheck said the scientists' success in developing accurate theoretical predictions lay, in part, in the fact that they focused on mathematical tools instead of trying to reproduce experiments.

"Knowing how nature ticks at a microscopic scale, we set out to develop a robust theory that was capable of dealing with a wide range of situations and systems," Krotscheck said. "We demanded that our mathematical description is accurate for both fermions and bosons, in different dimensions, and for both coherent and incoherent excitations. Only after we were done, we looked at experiments."

Krotscheck's colleagues on the study include Henri Godfrin, Matthias Meschke and Ahmad Sultan of the Institut Néel, CNRS, and Université Joseph Fourier in France; Hans-Jochen Lauter of the Institut Laue-Langevin in France and Oak Ridge National Laboratory; and Helga Bohm and Martin Panholzer of the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Johannes Kepler University in Austria. Meschke also belongs to the Low Temperature Laboratory of Aalto University in Finland.

George Zimmerman Defense: Trayvon Martin Struck First, Tried to Grab Gun, Killer Claims

George Zimmerman, the man who shot and killed Florida teen Trayvon Martin, claims the teen was the aggressor, laying him out with a single punch, smashing his head on the ground repeatedly and trying to grab his gun, he tells police.

The neighborhood watch captain has not spoken publicly, but Zimmerman’s version of the nationally controversial Trayvon Martin case leaked on Monday.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that George Zimmerman told police he lost 17-year-old Martin in the Sanford, Fla., neighborhood he regularly patrolled.

He was walking back to his vehicle, he says, when the youth approached him from behind. The two exchanged words briefly then, Zimmerman said.

It was at that point that he claims Martin then punched him, jumped on top of him and began banging Zimmerman's head on the sidewalk.

Zimmerman said he cried for help; Martin's family thinks it was their son who was crying out. Witness accounts differ and 911 tapes are not clear.

A statement from Sanford police, who have not charged Zimmerman, said the Sentinel story was "consistent" with evidence turned over to prosecutors.

Because Martin was black and Zimmerman has a white father and Hispanic mother, the case has become a racial flashpoint that has civil rights leaders and others leading a series of protests in Sanford and around the country.

To the dismay of millions, Geraldo Rivera claimed Martin made himself a target with his hoodie. President Obama even spoke out about the case.

Meanwhile, Martin's parents are blaming police for leaking information about their son being suspended from school for marijuana. Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, and family attorneys said it was part of an effort to demonize her son.

"They killed my son and now they're trying to kill his reputation," Fulton told reporters.

Martin was suspended by Miami-Dade County schools because traces of marijuana were found in a plastic baggie in his book bag, family spokesman Ryan Julison said. Martin was serving the suspension when he was killed.

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump said the link between the youth and marijuana have no bearing on the probe into his shooting death. State and federal agencies are investigating, with a grand jury set to convene April 10.

Sanford Police insist there was no authorized release of the information but acknowledged there may have been a leak. The City Manager, Norton Bonaparte, Jr., said it would be investigated and the person responsible could be fired.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? After nine years and two grand jury reports, prosecutors have brought a landmark case to trial that explores how the Archdiocese of Philadelphia dealt with child sex-abuse complaints against scores of Roman Catholic priests.

Monsignor William Lynn is the first U.S. church official ever charged over his handling of abuse complaints. He supervised more than 800 priests as the secretary for clergy in Philadelphia from 1992 to 2004.

Prosecutors charge that Lynn kept dangerous priests in parish work around children to protect the church's reputation and avoid scandal. They say the church kept secret files dating to 1948 that show a long-standing conspiracy to doubt sex abuse victims and protect priests.

Assistant District Attorney Jacqueline Coelho called the case "a battle between right and wrong within the archdiocese and the office of secretary for clergy."

But defense lawyer Thomas Bergstrom said Monday that Lynn had the "ugly job" of overseeing sex abuse complaints but that Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua alone determined priest assignments and transfers.

"There is documentary evidence that the sexual abuse of children happened in the Catholic Church," Bergstrom said. "We're not going to run from that. He (Lynn), perhaps alone, is the one who tried to correct it."

Lynn, 61, appeared solemn in court, where he has appeared often the past few months for pretrial hearings and jury selection. He has been under investigation for eight years, through two grand jury investigations that blasted Bevilacqua and his successor, Cardinal Justin Rigali, saying they covered up child sex complaints lodged against more than 60 priests.

But Lynn was the only supervisor charged. If convicted of two counts each of conspiracy and child endangerment, Lynn faces up to 28 years in prison.

Bevilacqua died in January, although the jury might see a videotaped deposition he gave weeks earlier. The trial could last several months.

Besides Lynn, Rev. James Brennan is on trial, accused of raping a 14-year-old boy in 1996. Both men entered not guilty pleas Monday. A third defendant, defrocked priest Edward Avery, pleaded guilty last week to charges in the case.

Defense lawyers have long planned to attack the credibility of the two accusers, who have struggled with drug addiction and have criminal records. But that strategy took something of a hit when Avery entered the surprise guilty plea Thursday.

Avery, who moonlighted as a disc jockey and adopted six Hmong children during his years in the priesthood, admitted that he sexually assaulted a 10-year-old altar boy in a church sacristy in 1999. That victim accused another priest and his sixth-grade teacher of raping him during his parochial school years. They will go on trial separately because neither was an archdiocesan priest reporting to Lynn.

Brennan's accuser has convictions for theft and filing a false police report and called none other than the person he accused of abusing him when he needed to do court-ordered community service, a defense lawyer said.

"If you don't believe (him) ... the case is over," said lawyer William Brennan, who is not related to his client.

Avery's plea also acknowledged that the archdiocese kept him in ministry despite being aware of an earlier complaint. That complaint, dating to 1992, was detailed in court Monday by the first witness to take the stand in the trial.

A Philadelphia detective read a 1992 letter from a medical student that said Avery had once gotten him drunk and molested him after a DJ stint at a West Philadelphia nightclub and later on a ski trip.

"I do not want money or any kind of media scandal," the accuser wrote. "I need to know that he has been evaluated and treated for this disorder and his threat to other impressionable young men is gone."

The archdiocese interviewed Avery, who denied the allegations before saying they could have happened when he was drunk.

"I thought he was a potential (priest). I was so good to him," Avery told Lynn and Bishop Joseph Cistone in a 1992 interview, according to an archdiocesan memo read in court.

Avery was sent for inpatient therapy for eight months before returning to the ministry. He sexually assaulted the altar boy seven years later, he admitted Thursday.

Mobile Banking Consolidation: Monitise Buys Clairmail For $173 Million

One more sign of the mobile money space continuing to grow up: some significant consolidation underway. Today, the UK-based mobile banking specialists Monitise announced that it is buying Clairmail, a U.S.-based competitor, for $173 million, as part of its global expansion. The combined group says it will serve 13 million customers world-wide processing some $10 billion of payments weekly, and will give Monitise a much bigger and direct presence in the North American market: one-third of the top 50 U.S. financial institutions are now clients of the group.

Chevrolet replacing 120-volt power cords on most Volt automobiles

If you're one of the 10,000 or so folks who pay insurance on a Chevrolet Volt, you may have a new cable coming your way. According to The Detroit News and Yahoo! Autos, General Motors will soon be sending out replacement 120-volt charging cords for Volt automobiles, which are said to "offer some more consistency in charging," while also making it more durable. We're told that some of the newfangled chargers have shipped with recent Volts, but the majority of customers were sent home with the older model. Of note, GM won't be swapping out any of those optional 240-volt cords, and the company won't consider this a recall or safety issue. As for getting your replacement? Owners are slated to be notified directly in the "next few weeks."

Mrs. Nixon: A Novelist Imagines a Life

In his 2010 manifesto, Reality Hunger, David Shields attacked realism in fiction, calling upon writers to give up the ideal of the purely imagined novel or short story. Too much fiction, he argued, is written as if modernism never happened, and remains bound to nineteenth-century narrative conventions of plot and characterization:

I love literature but not because I love stories, per se. I find nearly all the moves the traditional novel makes unbelievably predictable, tired, contrived and essentially purposeless? It?s not clear to me what such narratives are supposedly revealing about the human condition. I?m drawn to literature instead as a form of thinking, consciousness, wisdom-seeking +

The above words are Shields?, but much of his book is a collage of other writers? unattributed quotations, lifted from a variety of sources, including novels, short stories, essays, reviews, and journalism. Urging writers to steal more boldly, Shields invited authors, novelists in particular, to consider the kind of autobiographical and ?realistic? forms that modern readers gravitate toward ? memoir, personal essay, lyric essay, narrative journalism ? and to meld these forms with traditional techniques in order to create new hybrid works:

The books that most interest me sit on a frontier between genres. On one level, they confront the real world directly; on another level, they mediate and shape the world, as novels do. The writer is there as a palpable presence on the page, brooding over his society, daydreaming it into being, working his own brand of linguistic magic on it +

I bring up Shields because when I first began to read Ann Beattie?s most recent book, Mrs. Nixon, I thought I was encountering a hybrid book of the Shields variety. I was excited by this prospect, in part because I?m sympathetic to Shields?s argument, but also because Beattie was the last writer I would expect to challenge conventional forms. Long associated with The New Yorker magazine (so much so that her recent collection of stories is titled The New Yorker Stories), Beattie?s short stories are prime examples of the kind of quiet, faux-Chekhovian realism that many people think of, fairly or not, when they think of literary fiction. She is a master storyteller, but a traditional one, hiding her authorial presence and revealing herself only through the characters and situations she creates.

In Mrs. Nixon, Beattie seems, at first, to be lifting the veil at last. Subtitled ?A Novelist Imagines a Life?, her new book is a collage of short stories, vignettes, essays, lists, letters, and ruminations, each providing a different view of Mrs. Nixon, to create an uncanny, splintered portrait. In an introductory note, Beattie informs readers that Mrs. Nixon is based on real people, real names, and real events. Throughout the book, Beattie quotes directly from the Nixons? personal correspondence, newspaper and magazines articles, and numerous Nixon biographies, including Julie Nixon Eisenhower?s Pat Nixon: The Untold Story, as well as President Nixon?s own memoirs. Where there is dialogue, Beattie reports: ?I do my best to write and think my characters would think and speak, based on what I?ve read about them. In some cases, factual events are used only as points of departure, which should become clear; those times I write fiction will be recognizable as such.? In other words, Beattie has taken pains not to manipulate Mrs. Nixon?s life story by shaping it into a fluid narrative with a beginning, middle, and end?and all the psychological motivations in between. Instead, Beattie attempts to write about what she can only reasonably guess about Mrs. Nixon. Where there are no reasonable guesses to be made, Beattie makes absurd ones, or indulges in bizarre creative writing exercises: a chapter written in the style of F. Scott Fitzgerald, for instance. When all else fails, Beattie goes all meta and comments on the process of writing a book about Mrs. Nixon, and on fiction writing in general.

One would think that a veteran like Beattie would have many interesting things to say about writing, but these are easily the most tedious portions of Mrs. Nixon. Part of the problem is that Beattie is hesitant to disclose anything about herself or her writing process. She prefers to quote other writers, or to speak generally about ?the fiction writer? and his peculiar habits. While these are sometimes amusing, they are often banal, pointing out, say, that fiction writers are preoccupied, or badly dressed. Occasionally her observations veer into the cryptic: ?The fiction writer tends to look as high as a tree, or even a mountain, but often the sky seems too much?; or: ?Writers are dolphins?.

Beattie also spends a lot of time analyzing the works of other writers, specifically realists, including classic authors like de Maupassant, Chekhov, and Tolstoy, as well as her New Yorker contemporaries. Her criticism, though, is not especially illuminating ? again, because she reveals so little of herself. The only clues to her personal aesthetic are her occasional derisive remarks about the current ?Age of Memoir? (capitalization is Beattie?s). She compares autobiographical asides to weeds growing up through cracks in the sidewalk, and approves of a friend?s pronunciation of memoir as ?me-moir.? Relating a conversation with a magazine editor who wants to know how he can tell which autobiographical submissions are actually true, Beattie admits to a feeling of ?terror in her heart?, not wanting ?to get into a philosophical discussion? about the difference between fiction and non-fiction. Insofar as Mrs. Nixonis that philosophical discussion, it?s clear that Beattie feels that fiction is the superior art form, and that non-fiction writers are telling a story that is less emotionally truthful.

And yet how much better Mrs. Nixon might have been if Beattie had indulged her inner memoirist! I realize that this is far from Beattie?s intention, and that my initial, perhaps wishful reading of Mrs. Nixon as a response to Shields?s Reality Hunger was false, not to mention chronologically impossible. (Beattie was well into her project when Shields?s manifesto was published, so it?s doubtful that it had any influence on her.) Still, Beattie drops a number of tantalizing autobiographical hints throughout Mrs. Nixon, enough to make me wish for a completely different kind of book. For instance, in an early chapter titled ?The Writer?s Sky?, Beattie tells us that she is happy to find herself drawn to Mrs. Nixon as a subject, even though Patricia Nixon is ?a person I would have done anything to avoid.? By way of explanation, Beattie goes on to describe Mrs. Nixon as:

A person of my mother?s generation, who also lived for years in the place where I grew up, Washington, DC, which was then such a different town (more Southern; less cosmopolitan; a best a shadow city of New York) +

It?s telling that Beattie refers to Mrs. Nixon?s generation as her mother?s, not her father?s, and it?s an identification Beattie suggests throughout Mrs. Nixon. At one point she writes: ?Although there was a huge gap between my mother and Mrs. Nixon, I sensed that she was something my mother might have become, if not for fate.? In one of the book?s few entertaining episodes, Beattie describes an imaginary meeting between her mother and Mrs. Nixon, in which the two women chat while shoe-shopping, sharing a sentimental moment as they admire a pair of high heels. It?s a moment that Beattie undercuts in the next chapter, chiding the reader for enjoying such autobiographical manipulations. And yet, it?s one of the few places in the book where Mrs. Nixon seemed, for a moment, to be a flesh-and-blood human being.

Reflecting on Mrs. Nixon?s carefully coifed hairstyle, Beattie writes, ?She appeared proper ? always proper?, and then attempts to dig underneath this propriety by quoting President Nixon?s claims that his wife, given the choice, would prefer to walk on the beach ?with the breeze in her hair?. But one senses that Beattie does not really believe in this version of Mrs. Nixon, despite her careful reporting. Even worse, one suspects that Beattie is rather bored with this analysis, and that if she were not so constrained by her principles ? her strictly imposed line between fiction, memoir, and non-fiction ? she could have discovered something much more interesting lurking beneath the surface of Mrs. Nixon?s stiff persona. If only she had.

2012 NCAA Tournament: Reaction To Florida's Run To Elite 8

The Florida Gators reached their second straight Elite 8 on Thursday, beating Marquette. Our Florida blog Alligator Army is pretty impressed with their run so far, and don't see it ending on Saturday.

Florida's playing very, very well, but it's not playing the brand of basketball we had grown accustomed to seeing the Gators play. These Gators gnash their teeth and run, scrap for rebounds, play defense like they value almost every possession, and have cut down on the lapses and silly errors and bad shots ? and few of their good shots are even falling. There's significant room above the current water level here, and, after feeling like Florida had tapped its potential, I have seen the Gators play much better ? but I still think Florida hasn't put it all together, and still believe the Gators are legitimate national championship contenders as is.

The Gators made it this far last year, and the seniors on the team might still have a bad taste in their mouth from that experience. But they'll have to face a tough Louisville squad on Saturday to make the Final Four, and that will be a difficult test.

Businesses seeking flood insurance could face greater uncertainty and prohibitively expensive insurance premiums in just four months? time, experts warn.

The British Property Federation has called for urgent action to create a new settlement between Government and insurers, warning that the end of an agreement that guarantees near universal provision of flood cover could leave thousands of businesses facing unaffordable bills.

The existing ABI/Government Statement of Principles between Government and the Association of British Insurers is due to end in June 2013, without any sign of a suitable alternative. The BPF said that the uncertain future of flood insurance will hit businesses from July 2012 as insurance cover starts to be renewed that covers the period that includes June 2013.

Liz Peace, chief executive of the British Property Federation, said: ?This is a huge issue that is not getting the focus it needs, and time is running out. Its impact will be felt not only by our industry, but also banks and mortgage lenders. Uninsurable property may be difficult to sell; banks and mortgage lenders may not wish to lend on properties in flood risk areas. Bank covenants and lease obligations may not be met, making it easier to prematurely end them.?

Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: ?Insurers are determined that flood insurance remains as widely available and as competitively priced as possible after the current Statement of Principles agreement with the Government ends in June next year. This can only happen if the Government agrees with the industry a new, long-term and sustainable flood insurance model ? and the need for that agreement is urgent. The current agreement is well past its best-by date as it distorts the market for both consumers and insurers. This is why we need a new approach, based on some form of pooling arrangement, to ensure that flood cover remains available to those at higher risk?
