EUROPA - Press Releases - Mergers: Commission approves ...

European Commission

Press release

Brussels, 29 June 2012

Mergers: Commission approves acquisition of IBM's retail store solutions business by rival Toshiba

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of IBM's retail store solutions business by Toshiba Tec, a majority owned subsidiary of the Japanese company Toshiba. Retail solutions are integrated systems of hardware and software that are used for processing sales transactions by retail store customers. They are capable of connecting and interoperating with a retailer?s other IT and software systems and are therefore distinguished from electronic cash registers. The Commission concluded that the transaction will not raise competition concerns because of the limited overlap between the parties' activities, in particular within the European Economic Area (EEA), and because the merged entity will face sufficient competition.

The proposed transaction would lead to an overlap between the parties' activities in the market for retail solutions, which includes point-of-sale (?POS?) systems, PC-on-cash-drawer (?PCCD") systems and self-service-systems. The Commission investigated the transaction's competitive effects on this overall product market as well as its possible sub-markets segmented by type of retail solutions (such as POS, PCCD, etc.) or customer segments (such as food retailers, convenience stores and petroleum outlets etc.).

The Commission's investigation found that the merged entity will continue to face substantial competition from several well-established, strong and effective competitors in the market(s) concerned. In addition, the investigation revealed that the parties were not each other's' closest competitors and that customers can easily switch suppliers.

The Commission therefore concluded that the transaction does not raise serious doubts as to its compatibility with the internal market and with the EEA Agreement.

The operation was notified to the Commission on 24 May 2012.

Companies and products

Toshiba is a diversified manufacturer, providing a wide range of products and services on a global basis in four business domains: digital products, electronic devices, social infrastructure and home appliances. Toshiba Tec falls within Toshiba?s digital products business domain and manufactures products and business solutions in four core areas: (i) retail solutions, (ii) office solutions, (iii) supply chain solutions and (iv) inkjet heads.

IBM is a U.S. public company active worldwide in the development, production, and marketing of a wide variety of information technology solutions. IBM's retail store solutions business is active within IBM's system and technology business segment and comprises the development and distribution of retail solutions, including POS systems, self-service-systems, and related maintenance and technical support services.

Merger control rules and procedures

The Commission has the duty to assess mergers and acquisitions involving companies with a turnover above certain thresholds (see Article 1 of the Merger Regulation) and to prevent concentrations that would significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.

The vast majority of mergers do not pose competition problems and are cleared after a routine review. From the moment a transaction is notified, the Commission generally has a total of 25 working days to decide whether to grant approval (Phase I) or to start an in-depth investigation (Phase II).

A non-confidential version of today's decision will be available at:

Israel's finest are going for gold

Small but perfectly formed. That is what Israeli sports fans are hoping following the announcement of the country's Olympic squad.

Although numbers are down from Beijing, quality rather than quantity is the name of the game this time. When I met IOC Secretary General Efraim Zinger last year, he told me of the top targets for the London Games. "Two win two medals and for a female athlete to stand on the podium," he said.

The 36 sportsmen and women have worked hard to cement their seat on the plane, and although many will arrive in the capital unknown, they are on a mission to impress and there will be no better feeling than if they can return through customs at Ben Gurion Airport with medals to declare.

* Football pundits up and down the land have been reflecting on England's Euro 2012 campaign, which ended with a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy in the quarter-finals. Many have touched on technical deficiencies and the youngsters out there must take note. I'm constantly trying to drum into my son the importance of using with both feet.

It is hard to believe that even our finest footballers struggle to string two passes together and show good touch and close control and that is why I'm delighted about the plans to push small-sided youth football matches. It's crucial to get the basics right or else we will always be playing catch-up with Europe's finest.

* Faithfold A have moved quickly to re-sign midfield general Paul Babai and Jonny Haik from North West Neasden. The dynamic duo left the Superhoops 12 months ago and will help soften the blow of losing top-scorer Mike Pearson to Lions. A midfield trio of Alex Levack, Alex Kaye and Babai is a simply mouth-watering prospect.

* I was disappointed to hear Giuliano Grazioli is no longer required by the new set-up at Barnet. A friend of our youth football, the great and good in Jewish sport hold Graz and his coaching techniques in high regard and I can't imagine he will be a jobseeker for long.

I'd also like to wish Michael Stone, the former first-team coach at Underhill, and Anthony Bloch, secretary of Blackburn Rovers, all the best after they parted company with their respective clubs.

* Jewish football recently lost a dear friend when David Price, the founder of Kinnor Football Club, passed away. I heard only good things about David, a man who built one of the finest Jewish youth football sections. It was great to see a commemorative Fair Play trophy, donated by Jason Webber, named in his honour at the Hong Kong Maccabi football awards. David Efron was the recipient.

Roping ?em in on Canada Day

Published: June 29, 2012 7:00 AM

Some mighty familiar names in the Vancouver music scene are coming to Surrey July 1 for the free Canada Day bash at the Cloverdale Millennium Amphitheatre (64 Avenue and 176 Street.)

The High Bar Gang has been called a ?roots supergroup? featuring some of Vancouver?s finest musicians who have come together to perform gospel and bluegrass music.

With such legendary performers and solo artists as Barney Bentall, Shari Ulrich, Angela Harris, Wendy Bird and others, it?s well-nigh impossible to disagree.

Bentall?s fellow Legendary Heart Colin Nairne brought the gang together a few years ago.

The Juno-winning collective, which also includes Eric Reed and Rob Becker, has been playing to sold-out houses this spring, and last September opened for Blue Rodeo at Stanley Park?s Malkin Bowl.

The gang takes its name from the High Bar region in the Cariboo, near the Fraser River, where Bentall spends part of the year.

The High Bar Gang is just one of the featured performers for the 2012 Surrey Canada Day celebration. They?ll hit the stage at 2:30 p.m..

Montreal?s Sam Roberts Band will be headlining. Other featured acts include Vancouver indie artist Hannah Georgas, Jerry Doucette, Blaze of Glory (a Bon Jovi tribute band) and more.

This year?s 100.5 FM PEAK Performance project contestants will also perform live.

Sam Roberts Band takes the stage at 8:45 p.m., followed by the traditional fireworks display at 10:15 p.m.

Midi Lathe/Stand setup... aka help me set up ... - Family Woodworking

Ok spinny types.

Now that I have my Midi in the shop and even resting on its stand, what's next? That's roughly where I plan on having my lathe in the shop at this point... the storage tower to the left of the window was meant to hold works in progress (never got around to making any...), and I plan on putting the grinder on a small shelf on the wall to the right of the lathe.

Here are some 'old' construction shots of the lathe stand, to which I've added a shelf, which is stacked with turning blanks (pretty well dried out ones at this point, but...)

I also added a pair of 2x4's which stick out about 4" both front and rear to give it a wider footprint since these photos were taken

As it stands now the workpiece on the lathe is 'just below' elbow height when I'm standing.

Is there any advantage for me to tie the stand in to the wall and/or floor for stability? I also am planning on a rack for chisels, and/or a shelf for my chuck and so forth.

Oh, and also a light of some sort over in that corner as well (the only flourescent would be behind and over my shoulder at the moment)

IRS offers tax reprieve to Americans living abroad - Financial Post

Many Americans living abroad will get a small reprieve from U.S. Internal Revenue Service rules on reporting foreign assets, the agency announced on Tuesday.

The IRS said it would allow some U.S. citizens, including dual citizens, who have not filed income tax returns or not disclosed their foreign bank accounts, to come forward without facing onerous penalties or the threat of prosecution.

The agency said the reprieve, to begin Sept. 1, would also apply to U.S. expatriates with foreign retirement plans, including Canadian ones.

?Today we are announcing a series of common-sense steps to help U.S. citizens abroad get current with their tax obligations and resolve pension issues,? IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement.

The optional procedure just announced is available only to Americans who owe little or no back taxes, not to those who have squirreled away substantial amounts in secret offshore accounts that they have knowingly failed to disclose to the IRS.

An IRS statement said the new guidelines were for ?low compliance risk? taxpayers, generally people who have simple returns and owe US$1,500 or less in tax for any covered years.

The IRS?s move in this area comes amid a broad crackdown by the U.S. Justice Department and the IRS on suspected offshore tax evasion by wealthy Americans through Swiss banks.

It also follows complaints by tax lawyers that many U.S. expatriates have been unaware of the new rules on tax returns and disclosure of foreign bank accounts.

They said many of these people were not willful tax evaders, but simply uninformed about filing returns and, if needed, disclosures known as Foreign Bank and Financial Account Reports, or FBARs.

The IRS said that under the new procedure, taxpayers would have to file delinquent tax returns for the past three years and delinquent FBARs for the past six years.

The agency said ?higher compliance risk? taxpayers would be subject to a more thorough review and, potentially, an audit.

The IRS tightened its policies in other ways on Tuesday, saying it might exclude from the voluntary disclosure program U.S. taxpayers with foreign accounts at foreign banks that have faced sanctions or worse from U.S. authorities.

The IRS also said taxpayers would be barred from the disclosure program if they challenged in foreign courts the disclosure of their accounts while failing to inform the U.S. Justice Department of such challenges.

Taking an evidence-based approach to wellness | Newsroom ...

AURORA, Colo. -- Health and fitness bloggers from across the nation discovered there's no better place to learn about their passion than the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center.

About 125 bloggers attended the Fitness & Health Blogger Conference, the nation's premier event for healthy-lifestyle bloggers, at the new wellness center June 22-24. This was not a run-of-the-mill conference where attendees passively sit through one speaker session after another. At the state-of-the-art Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, bloggers took part in exercise classes, cooking demonstrations and many interactive breakout sessions.

Michelle Hickey, owner of Positively Well: Wellness Solutions for Work and Life Balance, recently changed careers from the pharmaceutical industry to being a self-employed wellness professional. The conference provided invaluable information, she said.

"This is my way to start networking in this industry and learning some tips and tricks," Hickey said. "I'm from Boulder, so this is close."

On Friday, James O. Hill, PhD, executive director of the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, gave a keynote talk on "The Importance of an Evidence-Based Approach to Health & Wellness."

Hill, a nationally recognized expert on obesity, explained the many factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States. His presentation turned into a lively exchange with the bloggers, who interjected questions and observations during the discussion.

A conference attendee asked Hill if New York City's recent ban of super-sized soda drinks will end up curbing obesity.

"People want to attack sugar and regulate sugar. We continue to make the mistake of focusing on one thing," Hill said. "If we reduce sugar consumption by half I don't think we move the needle on obesity very much, because it's just one factor."

The combination of fat and sugar is the real culprit to weight gain, but there's more to it than that. "Being obese is a natural response to an environment that encourages excess food intake and low energy expenditure," Hill said. "... We've created the environment to serve the biology, essentially. You can get through the day without any activity other than when you can't help it."

Hill pointed out that an Amish male takes an average 18,000 steps a day compared to the the 5,000 steps averaged by other American men and women. He asked what can be learned from this. A blogger got big laughs from the group when she responded, "We should become Amish?"

Hill and the conference attendees enjoyed a lively dialogue about who is responsible for the obesity epidemic: Is it individual responsibility or the food industry?

Ninety-one percent of fitness and health bloggers blog about their "life experiences," while only 37 percent get their information from research and academic websites, according to Allan Wright of Zephyr Adventures, which organized the conference.

The evidence-based approach to wellness at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center was on full display as bloggers enjoyed access to experts including Inigo San Millan, PhD (achieving/maintaining physical fitness), Lisa Corbin, MD (integrative/alternative medicine) and Holly Wyatt, MD (current evidence on weight loss and management).

Jim Ellis, MBA, director of operations at the Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, told the group that the nation faces "daunting challenges" in the battle against obesity and toward overall wellness. "You help us get our message of evidence-based wellness out to the public and we help you by providing a resource that you probably wouldn't get anywhere else in the world," Ellis said.

Earlier this year, the wellness center hosted a national conference for professional reporters who cover health and wellness on their beats.

Scrapbooking Graduation Memories ? Miami Mommy Blogger

Let this very Special Pro Scrapbooker Boost your Scrap Confidence.
Check it out!

How to scrapbook banner 400x400

Posted By Rachel Paxton

It?s hard to believe that my daughter has just graduated from
high school. She has some great memories of this event for us to
preserve in a graduation scrapbook.

We decided to purchase a ready-made scrapbook instead of
assembling one. At a local bookstore we found a large spiral
bound scrapbook/journal on clearance for $2.99!

My daughter was not able to get her senior yearbook before
graduation, so she had her friends write notes to her in her
scrapbook. She took the book with her to her senior class party,
then we set the book out at her family graduation party for
friends and family to sign.

We had many photo taking opportunities over the weekend. We have
pictures from the graduation ceremony, from her senior class
party, and from her family party to put in her scrapbook. I will
mat one of her senior portraits on the front of the scrapbook.

There are other mementos you can preserve in a graduation
scrapbook. Here are some ideas to get you started:

- Cards from family and friends
- Program from graduation ceremony
- Newspaper clippings
- Report cards
- Achievement and/or award certificates
- Senior party mementos

I will finish off the scrapbook with graduation stickers from a
local craft store.

A graduation scrapbook doesn?t have to be a work of art. The
important thing is to preserve the memories of your graduate?s
big day.

This would be a great project to do with your teen. If they
would like to tackle the project themselves, give them all the
supplies and let them unleash their creativity. My daughter
loves the finished project, but is not much interested in
scrapbooking, so she is more than happy to let me do it for her.

BoogieBoard Jot eWriting pad hands-on (video)

It's been quite some time since we've heard from Improv Electronics, maker of writing tablets such as the Boogie Board Rip. The company was on hand at CEA today to tease its latest device, the Boogie Board Jot, which like the Rip sports a reflex LCD display that doesn't require power to record your scribbles. In fact, the device only uses energy when you hit the eraser button, which means the battery should get you through some 50,000 erases.

Unlike the Rip, this model has no on-board storage, which explains the cheaper $40 price. Another new feature is the redesigned stylus, which acts as a stand for the device when docked in the onboard slot. Improv Electronics will launch the Jot in September, but you can catch some of those back-to-school vibes in our hands-on video below the break.

Why education is such a difficult path for Travellers to follow?

From the TES

Lisa Marie Vine is sitting in a gleaming kitchen in her in-laws? newly built house, bouncing her baby, Henry Joe, on her knee.

?Students used to call me a ?dirty pikey?,? she tells me. ?But the teachers didn?t believe me. I was only 12 and I used to cry when I was blamed for things I didn?t do.

?My mum wanted us to go to school. She used to go and complain. The school said they would sort things out, but they didn?t.?

Vine?s solution was to effectively leave when she was 13; she then spent most of her time working in a cafe. But the decision was not without major consequences. For Vine, now 21, can read and write only ?a little?. She claims she is dyslexic and admits she needs help filling in official forms and often has to ask what ?long? words mean.

Such stories are not uncommon, and they go some way to explaining why Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils are the lowest-achieving ethnic group in schools in England. They are more likely than any other demographic group to be identified as having special educational needs and are more likely to be excluded from school, according to the Department for Education (DfE).

When children from Traveller backgrounds do go to secondary school, they usually stop turning up after the age of 14. Unsurprisingly, the results of this sporadic relationship with schooling are dire. The DfE records just 17 per cent of Irish Travellers and 11 per cent of Gypsy and Roma pupils achieving five A*-C GCSEs, including English and maths, in 2010-11, compared with a national average of 58 per cent.

The picture at primary level - where full-time pupils from these communities are more likely to be found - is not much better. Just 40 per cent of Irish Travellers and 35 per cent of Gypsy and Roma pupils were awarded the expected level 2 in key stage 1 reading assessments, according to 2008 government figures, compared with 85 per cent of all pupils.

The statistics are depressing in themselves, but they also hint at children struggling to cope with lessons, with teachers and with what they say is repeated racial abuse from other pupils. But it is not just a story about bullying. These young people are brought up in private communities with strong traditions. When they go to schools there is an inevitable culture clash.

?I went to school to learn, but I just got sarcasm from teachers. Honest to God, I never got out of the punishment block (a time-out room),? says Angela, a 15-year-old Irish Traveller who hasn?t attended school since Year 7.

?I would turn round and smile at a girl and they would say that I was having a chat. That was it, I had to spend the rest of the time in the block.?

The teenager, who is officially home educated, now spends her days helping in the family home, an immaculate caravan on a private site in Kent. The carpet is covered with protective plastic, and there are lovingly dusted statuettes and gleaming figurines in a polished cabinet. Angela also spends a lot of time abroad visiting her sisters across Europe.

Her father, John, claims that every one of his eight children was singled out by secondary school teachers for unfair treatment. Only a month ago, his 13-year-old son Tony - a confident boy with a cheeky smile and the habit of smoothing his neat dark brown hair - left school. He hopes to have a home tutor.

?I don?t think some teachers have got the patience with Travelling children and my children didn?t seem to mix,? says John, who doesn?t want his full name used in case his family receives abuse.

?They seemed to be in the punishment block most of the time. It felt like we were going round in circles. I?m not saying Tony was a saint, but there was a lot of petty stuff that could have been overlooked. It didn?t strike me that they wanted Travellers in their school.?

According to Tony, he was always put in the punishment block for a simple reason, such as ?I forgot equipment like a pencil?. His older brother Barney, now 17, says he had the same experience. ?Most of the time, 70 per cent of the people in the punishment block were Travellers. We were having a laugh in there,? he says.

Children from Travelling backgrounds are far more likely to be excluded from school than pupils from any other ethnic group. A total of 0.47 per cent of Irish Traveller children and 0.33 per cent of Gypsy or Roma children were expelled in 2009-10, compared with 0.09 per cent of the total population of state schools including all ethnicities.

Indeed, a total of 17 per cent of Irish Travellers and 15 per cent of Gypsy or Roma children were suspended from school in the same year, according to a report from the Office of the Children?s Commissioner, compared with 4 per cent of all pupils. Many Irish Traveller children also left school earlier than other groups, with only 38 per cent reaching the statutory leaving age in 2009-10.

So are these children more likely to be punished by teachers? And why are they more likely to give up on education?

Cultural chasm

Although it is now common knowledge that Gypsy children are likely to abandon their secondary education before it has even started - thanks to the populist, fly-on-the-wall Channel 4 documentary My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding - it remains rare for people to ask why. But if anything is to be done about the shocking underperformance of these children, the first hurdle to overcome is the vast cultural chasm.

Angela is convinced that the teachers who taught her and her siblings had judged them before they met, expecting them to have behavioural problems and disobey their authority.

She may be right: there may be prejudice in the system. Clearly, the families interviewed by TES would wholeheartedly agree with Trevor Phillips, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, who has said that discrimination against these communities appears to be the ?last ?respectable? form of racism?.

According to one headteacher, who runs a pupil referral unit in Kent, some schools still ?stigmatise? children from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller backgrounds.

?It is assumed that schools feel their parents will be badly behaved, therefore the child will be badly behaved and they are not going to do well in school, which is nonsense,? says the head, who asked not to be named.

Brian Foster, chair of the Advisory Council for the Education of Romany and other Travellers, supports this view, and says schools fall into two categories: either unwilling to yield to the demands of Traveller families or too eager to respond to their different needs.

He says that the first situation leaves children with three options: ?fight, flight or playing white?. ?Playing white? is a telling reference to how Traveller communities view their mainstream neighbours.

?Most schools want to include children, but sometimes they send out a message about the kind of pupil they want,? Foster says. ?They might not want to lose children from the Travelling community who are pulled out of school, but they also do not want to give up their overall ethos. Schools take themselves seriously and they expect others to take them seriously. The problem is that some Traveller parents don?t.?

Izaak, 21, an Irish Romany Traveller from Kent who also does not want his full name to be used, recalls that ?everyone wanted to fight? with his sister when other pupils found out about his family?s background. ?People hear things in the media and think we are violent. That?s not always true,? he says.

Izaak was excluded from school in Year 10 after a teacher accused him of threatening to hit her. But he and his family successfully fought a battle to quash this allegation and he was allowed to return. He claims the trouble arose only because he had been trying to protect his sister. He persuaded fellow pupils to provide witness statements to support his case and asked teachers to act as character witnesses.

?They knew I was polite and only occasionally rude if upset. There were a few Travelling children in my school and we just wanted to keep our heads down. Once a family is known, that?s it,? says Izaak.

?I never got an apology. When I went back to school I didn?t make a big thing about it. They messed up my education, but you just have to get on with it.?

Izaak now works for Kent County Council?s Minority Communities Achievement Service in schools as a mentor, counsellor and role model liaising with parents and teachers to get children back into education. But he sees children suffering the same discrimination that he says he experienced in his youth.

?I have come across children who were getting called ?pikeys?, ?wheels? and ?dirty scum?,? says Izaak, who does manual work at the weekends and cage fights ?for fun? because he does not want to be disconnected from his culture. ?I want to help them so that they don?t have to go through the same things in life as I have. Racism still goes on in schools.?

Izaak claims he is dyslexic and says he ?failed every exam? in Year 11. When he left school, he had a reading age of 4 to 6. Then one day he decided, out of boredom, to buy a Harry Potter book. It took him a year to complete, but finishing it coincided with his old school offering him a place to return and get qualifications.

A year later, he was awarded a BTEC in business and passed level 2 exams in maths, English and IT. He went on to get NVQ qualifications in electronics. He joined his father?s scrap metal business, but when work slowed down he applied for an apprenticeship with Kent County Council, where his mentoring role evolved.

Recurring problem

Discrimination isn?t a new problem for Travelling communities. Henry Stanford, 65, grandfather of Lisa Marie Vine, remembers that teachers had an ?attitude? towards him when he was at school in the 1950s.

?I had to go to the back of the class and was sent to the headmaster for the slightest thing,? he recalls. ?But I was always one for capering about, messing about. I used to walk the fields instead of going to school so my father didn?t know. Later, my children were picked on. But I used to make them stand up for themselves. You can?t do that nowadays.?

It is a story that still has resonance today. Catherine, 16, spent just three weeks at secondary school. During that time she says she was called names, pushed and kicked by a boy.

?She sat on the floor crying and said she was not going back,? says her mother, Mary Ellen Kindon, 36.

Catherine?s family, who are Gypsies, were deeply disappointed by the teachers? reactions, and claim that they did not punish her attackers. But unlike Izaak and his family, they chose not to challenge the teachers.

Kindon has four other children: Nikita, 13, Mary Ellen, 14, and twin sons Manilitho and Thomas James (TJ), who are 12. The boys attend secondary school in Leeds.

?My boys have been called ?Gypsy bastard? by other pupils,? Kindon says. ?Some are from different cultures themselves, so they should understand that this is racism. But we are used to it. This has been going on for donkey?s years.?

But there is more to this story of educational failure than prejudice against these minority communities. These are communities with very real issues about schooling. Many simply don?t approve of it, particularly for girls, who they don?t trust schools to keep safe.

?We know what we want: to read and write,? says Frank Brazil, 63, a Romany Gypsy, who runs the South East Romany Museum in Kent with his family. ?We don?t want to be professors. The rest of it, our own ways, children can learn from their parents. They need to learn about their culture.?

Although this may not be a universal truth in these communities, the statistics suggest a resolute rejection of classroom excellence. Just 2.5 per cent of Irish Travellers and 2.7 per cent of Gypsy or Roma children at primary schools in England were recorded as being gifted and talented on the January 2011 schools census. In comparison, 10 per cent of Asian and black pupils were on the gifted and talented register.

In many ways, attitudes have not changed through the generations. Brazil started working when he was 10, but also managed to attend school on and off until he was 16. He and his family moved around the East and South East of the country picking fruit and vegetables. In winter he went to lessons, but in spring and summer he did not.

Similarly, when his children were young, the family travelled around Kent, doing the same work. They went back to school only when they were not needed in the fields.

Some things have changed, however, because Brazil?s grandchildren - Frank, 13, Archie, 11, Tilly, 7, and Lois, 3 - live in a house with their parents and go to school full-time. Brazil seems content with this, but he wants all children from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller backgrounds to be able to learn about their culture.

Indeed, it seems that he wants to combine the best of both worlds, but he has no suggestion as to how it would work in reality. All he says is that children from Traveller and Gypsy families should be treated as ?a special case?.

?Children need an education; times have moved on. But if families want to travel around they shouldn?t be persecuted.?

Like Brazil, Stanford went to school between hop-picking duties. His father gave him the choice of going to lessons or working with him - the latter was usually more attractive.

?I?m good at reckoning up and reading, and I liked art at secondary school. I used to like school to a certain degree - subjects like woodwork. But I wasn?t so keen on religious instruction,? he adds.

He says other people outside the classroom were just as important in his education, such as the sweet shop owner who helped him to read by promising treats if he could read the names on the labels.

In the past, Travelling communities were more mobile, taking seasonal jobs such as fruit- or crop-picking in the warmer months. Now, many families have a very different way of life; most live in houses or on a permanent site, not in highly decorated, horse-drawn caravans.

Yet these communities remain immensely proud of their heritage and try to live according to the same code of conduct as their ancestors. They want to keep their children safe and under their control. But it is this flexible attitude towards schooling that often leaves the children without qualifications.

Joan McVittie, headteacher of Woodside High School in North London, recently tried to persuade a 16-year-old girl from a Travelling family - who left school in the middle of taking her GCSEs to get married - to come back and sit exams.

?It was so incredibly sad. We knew she had scored a C in English language, she just needed to sit the other exam,? says McVittie, who is also president of the Association of School and College Leaders. ?In my experience, most children from the Travelling community are extremely bright and do well even when their attendance is low. The problem is getting them to school on exam day.

?Sadly, a number withdraw partway through their GCSEs. We recently had a boy who was getting very high marks in maths, who got sent back to Ireland after taking one paper. We pleaded with the family to send him back. At times, I could weep.?

Fear of daughters? safety

Catherine has been taught privately from the age of 11 by a tutor her parents found on the internet. She studies, together with her two sisters, but does not want to take GCSEs. Each girl gets just two hours of teaching a week. The rest of the time is spent helping their mother and doing homework. The family live in spotless caravans, carpeted with fluffy, cream rugs, on an official Leeds City Council Traveller site, squeezed in among industrial estates on the outskirts of the city.

One of the main reasons for the high drop-out rate for Traveller girls in secondary education is because their parents refuse to believe that secondary schools can protect them from the dangers of the wider world.

?They fear their daughters meeting boys without the kind of supervision you get in primary schools, while they are going through puberty. A lot of parents are concerned about their children being exposed to drugs in secondary schools,? says Gillie Heath, ?virtual? headteacher for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils at Kent County Council.

Certainly, Kindon ?doesn?t worry? about her sons at school. ?They can fend for themselves,? she says. ?Nobody will bully them. If anyone wants to have a fight with my boys they can do it. They train in the gym every day. I know people have tried. But the girls can?t (protect themselves).?

?Mums who have not had experience of secondary education can be fearful,? says Claire Lockwood, manager of Leeds City Council?s Gypsy Roma Traveller Achievement Service. ?They are very, very protective of their children, particularly girls.?

Sue Itzinger, a teacher who works with Lockwood, highlights the stark differences between the way boys and girls are treated in Travelling communities.

?Boys often leave school early so that they can learn a trade. But I have met some families who keep girls at home to look after younger siblings. This is what their mother did.?

Itzinger also knows families who do not want their children to go on residential or educational trips because they do not feel teachers can keep them safe. It is not unusual for teenage girls to not be allowed to take public transport or travel anywhere on their own.

How can schools break down this parental suspicion? Those who run Traveller education services say building up trust is essential.

?Some schools have a really good awareness of Traveller culture, and parents want their children to go to them,? says Heath. ?Teachers should treat families with trust and respect: this, along with a due regard for safety, is of paramount importance to the Traveller community.?

Finding role models for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils can also work wonders. But this is not always easy. In Kent, new mother Lisa Marie Vine is so far content to care for her new baby. But she is increasingly aware of the consequences of her brief time at school. She can?t read to him. Nor will she be able to help him learn in the way that most parents find so rewarding.

Adult education courses are an option, of course. But despite her frustrations, she says the memory of school is still too painful for her to want to set foot in another classroom.

But she does want an education for her son, who is 10 months old. ?I hope Henry Joe doesn?t go through what I did,? she says. ?But he will have to stick it out and go to school. I wish I had stayed on, gone to college and got a proper job.?

Channing Tatum Denies He Stole 'Magic Mike' Stripper Moves

'We created everything from a fictional place,' Tatum says, responding to allegations by former stripper co-workers.

Channing Tatum is reacting to a group of male dancers who allege that the actor quite literally stole their moves for his new movie, "Magic Mike," which takes place in the shirtless world of male strippers.

Two male dancers, Thomas "Awesome" Austin and London Steele, who danced with Tatum while he was a stripper in Florida, told TMZ last week that the experiences in the film, and even Tatum's character's name (Magic Mike), are all their own. Austin told the website, "He only danced for four months. How many events could have happened to him?" He added that even Tatum's move in the film, the Hot Seat, is all his own.

Director Steven Soderbergh has said that the film is loosely based on Tatum's experiences as a male dancer. And in a new interview, Tatum is opening up about the claims against him.

"Those guys have been trying to make money off of me since I got into this business," Tatum told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "Look, there's nothing that's factual in this whole movie other than that I was an 18-year-old kid and went into this world and I dropped out of college from playing football and was living on my sister's couch. There's not one character that I took from my real life; this is just a world that I went into, and I had a perspective on. And we created everything from a fictional place."

"Magic Mike" opens Friday, and Tatum is going into opening week with no ill will for his former co-workers. "I don't want to say anything bad about them because they're part of the reason why I think this world is so interesting," he said. "They're very interesting, intriguing and bizarre characters, and I'm thankful for weird people out there. They're some of the most creative people."

The June 29 film release also stars "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello, "White Collar" star Matt Bomer and Matthew McConaughey.

In an interview with MTV News, Tatum recalled how the film came out of a conversation he had with Soderbergh. "I was having a beer with Soderbergh — we were doing a movie together — and I told him about [my past stripping]," he said. "I'd been doing it for eight months of my life when I was, like, 18 or 19, and he said, 'We gotta make a movie out of that.' And I was like, 'Why? Why do we need to do that?' And he said, 'I've never seen that world on film before.' And then we really started talking about that, and we thought it would be really hilarious but still grounded in reality."

Check out everything we've got on "Magic Mike."

PFT: LT considered following Peyton to Denver

Anthony HargroveAP

Regardless of what anyone thinks the 2009 NFC title game sideline video shows (or doesn?t show), it doesn?t conclusively demonstrate the identity of the person who utters the key words ?give me my money? after assistant head coach Joe Vitt tells member of the Saints defense that Vikings quarterback Brett Favre may have a broken leg.

Still, the league stridently believes, despite an inability to see the mouth, lips, face, or head of former Saints defensive end Anthony Hargrove when ?give me my money? is uttered, that Hargrove defintely said the words.? It would make much more sense for the league to simply claim that someone from the Saints defense said it, which constitutes general proof that someone on the Saints defense knew about the existence of a bounty on Brett Favre.

That?s precisely what NFL general counsel Jeff Pash was expected to say during a Friday appearance on PFT Live.? And that seems to be what he started to say when explaining the league?s interpretation.? But then it subtly changed.

?What that video tape rather clearly demonstrates is two things,? Pash said.? ?One, there was a program and it corroborates rather clearly that there was a program where a player could be rewarded for making a play that resulted in an injury to an opponent ? you were basically making that point during the break.? Second, it demonstrates Mr. Hargrove?s awareness of the program and his understanding that it existed, and it demonstrates that his statements to our investigators in early 2010 denying the program and saying there was nothing like that? in existence were false.? That is the basis on which the Commissioner imposed discipline on Mr. Hargrove.?

Assuming that it was defensive tackle Remi Ayodele who said ?give me my money? (and not, for example, some guy off camera who was trying to get his change from the hot dog vendor), Pash?s initial observation is correct.? His second point continues to depend, however, on a finding that Hargrove and no one else said, ?Give me my money.?? And the video simply does not prove that.

The flaw could be fatal to the league?s case against Hargrove, if/when the NFLPA files litigation advancing theories that allow a judge to get to the merits of the case.? The 16 exhibits produced by the NFL (which Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com has graded, one by one) contain no mention or suggestion or hint of Hargrove paying money in, taking money out, or otherwise being aware of the bounty program.? The only way the league can prove that Hargrove knew about the bounty program and that he in turn lied to investigators is to prove that Hargrove and no one else said, ?Give me my money.?

The declaration he submitted in April, contrary to the league?s interpretation of it, doesn?t contain an admission that Hargrove lied.? Instead, it shows that defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and assistant head coach Joe Vitt told him to say that there was no bounty program, and that Hargrove complied ? without commentary on whether what he was saying was the truth.? Pash?s comments strongly suggest that, if Hargrove didn?t say, ?Give me my money,? there?s no proof that Hargrove?s story to investigators was untrue.

Regarding the question of whether the league believes Saints players deliberately intended to injure opponents, Pash explained that the NFL never tries to determine intent.? ?We have always consistently, going back for decades, going back to when Pete Rozelle was Commissioner, not made intent a part of the disciplinary decision because you can?t read someone?s mind,? Pash said.? ?You can only look at the objective evidence.?

That?s fine.? But it appears in this case that the NFL is trying to read Hargrove?s mind.? And, in turn, to put words in his mouth.

At a time when Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma already has filed a defamation claim regarding the things the league has publicly said about his involvement in the situation, it wouldn?t be a shock if Hargrove eventually does the same thing.

Debby Becomes a Tropical Storm, Texas Landfall a Possibility

? Tropical Storm Debby formed in the central Gulf on Saturday, and forecasters say a turn toward Texas might not be a bad thing for the state?s weather, 1200 WOAI news reports.

? That?s because Debby is expected to be bringing more rain than wind, and whoever gets the storm will receive a good soaking, according to the National Hurricane Center.

? Right now the models on Debby?s path are all over the place, but officials say a turn toward Texas, driven by the high pressure system that is bringing us our triple digit temperatures, could happen by the middle of the week.

? The questions would be whether Debby would turn sharply and hit the central Texas coast, brining heavy rains to the San Antonio area, or would instead hit the Houston area or the upper coast.

? Some computer models also show Debby moving into northern Mexico.

? Officials say we should have a better feeling about Debby?s path Monday or Tuesday.

? Some Gulf oil rigns have evacuated their employees from platforms as a precaution, and that has the potential of stopping the downward movement of gas prices.

? Debby is not expected to become a hurricane.

Former US Coach Convicted of 45 Counts of Child Sex Abuse

A former football coach, Jerry Sandusky, was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse on Friday.

The former Penn State assistant coach contested all the 48 counts but was found guilty of most of them and is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison. The trial concluded that the 68-year-old Sandusky was guilty of abusing 10 underaged boys over 15 years.

As the verdict emerged at the end of the second day of the deliberations, crowds outside the court loudly cheered. The jury included seven women and five men.

The case shook the Penn State University, Pennsylvania.

Sandusky is likely to appeal against the verdict, but his bail has already been revoked and is in custody.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly described the convict as a serial predator who has committed horrific acts of sexual assaults.

"No verdict can undo the pain and suffering caused by Mr Sandusky, but we do hope this judgment helps the victims and their families along their path to healing," according to the court's statement, reported by Altoonamirror.com.

The court has been hearing about the sexual abuses of Sandusky over a week-long testimony from the accusers.

The identities of the victims who are presently aged between 18 and 28 have been kept anonymous.

One of the oldest victims while describing Sandusky's sexual acts, said Sandusky used to lure him with gifts before forcing him to perform oral sex. "I spent so many years burying this in the back of my head. I feel responsible for what happened to the other victims," the Guardian?reported the victim as saying.

One of his six adopted children, Matt Sandusky, also reportedly came forward to give evidence against his father that he too was sexually abused.

After the verdict, although Sandusky's family did not react much, they were reportedly devastated.

"The Sandusky family is very disappointed obviously by the verdict of the jury but we respect their verdict. We have appeal issues. We believe we have decent appeal issues," defence attorney Joseph Amendola told the media outside the court.

gliderSuppose you dropped your phone -- a real fall, like from the second story -- and it broke. You're picking up the pieces, cursing and trying to think of the last time you backed up your contacts, when you notice something. Deep within the phone's hardware, hidden from everyday use, you find a message -- etched right onto the chassis. What kind of message? Let's say you found a Darwin fish, or the letters YHWH? Or perhaps something a little more difficult to decipher -- a code or symbol of some kind, not an inventory number, but still something meant to be seen and read? What would you make of it? This isn't actually a hypothetical situation or something out of a Neal Stephenson book. Apple has actually done this -- and the symbol they've chosen is as arcane and ominous as it is unmistakable.

Awol Erizku's Remixed Classics Hit Hasted Kraeutler Gallery (INTERVIEW, PHOTOS)

If you search for Awol Erizku online you will find a photographer who spends as much time in front of the camera as behind it. From his Tumblr or photo journal, the recent Cooper Union grad looks more like a rising star or socialite than a fine artist -- and he has the namedropping skills to match. Documenting the rising hip-hop sensations A$AP Mob and citing famed professors like they were treasured baseball cards, Erizku treats the cultural landscape as a game that he is winning. But beneath the hype, the Ethiopian-born, Bronx-raised artist possesses a strong vision of a future where black artists have their place in art history, and Erizku is seeing to the fact that he will be named among them.

Erizku scouts models online and on the streets to sit for classical portraits, and his images often riff off art history's most renowned nameless women. "Girl with the Pearl Earring," for example, becomes "Girl with the Bamboo Earring," and "Lady with an Ermine," becomes "Lady with a Pitbull." Leopard print and Louis Vuitton replace fur stoles and family crests. What saves the works from falling into a formulaic gimmick is their cinematic intensity; Erizku began his artistic career in film. The models are removed from the present moment yet still float somewhere between their contemporary garb and the historical ghosts they inhabit. There is an honesty to their expressions despite the fact that we're staring at pure fiction. We spoke with the 24-year-old artist about his recent solo exhibition at Hasted Kraeutler. Scroll down for images.

HP: Your work addresses the lack of diversity in classical art? Do you think the contemporary art world has evolved to be more diverse or do we still have a long way to go?

AE: I think it definitely has a long way to go. And that is something that I've been contemplating as well... how that is going to happen. It's one thing to make work as an artist and hope people understand why the work is being made and hope other people catch on. That museums and galleries see what artists like myself and Hank Willis Thomas and Kehinde Wiley are referring to. But it's another thing for artists to make it a ubiquitous kind of thing, so there is no longer a distinction between African American art and art in general. That's why I started making the art that I make.

HP: Why the black backdrops? What effect were you going for?

AE: Not really an effect... Black is a very powerful color. It's not loud, though it can be. It is only about what is there, what is in front of you, which is the black figure, and their expression which is about power and beauty. I think black allows me to control my subjects in that matter. Black is also something that can reference power and layers on the concept of putting black figures in light. It looks like they are emerging from the black background. Also, it's kind of like my touch.

HP: You have spoken less than favorably about the current notion that everyone is a photographer. But you are active on Tumblr, mixing and matching art, fashion and party photos frequently. How do you see the art realm and the social media realms interacting?

AE: I think anyone nowadays can pick up a decent resolution camera and shoot anything, put it up on their Tumblr and consider themselves a photographer. I am speaking not necessarily an elitist but someone who wants to study the traditional methods of photography, dabble in the dark room and make plenty of mistakes before I can make one decent exposure. I think if you are going to consider something you make, especially with photography, art, then you should at least understand the bare minimum.

Going back to the original question, I used to have my more serious work on my website but I am still going through this phase of asking: what does this all mean? What does social media have to do with the artist making work and people having unlimited access to the artist?

For me to go from being a student and studying these artist, to appearing as someone up-and-coming in their realm is due to the social media. Though I don't consider it the same, it is a documentation process. It allows me to archive all the stuff that is happening in my life. You can see when in my life I meet new people. When they appear again, and you see them in my final work. It is my journal and it is a visual diary of what is happening in my life. I think it is too pretentious for me to say everything you make is an artwork.

HP: Are you trying to make the artist less of a behind the scenes figure and more of a persona? How does the idea of the celebrity influence your work?

AE: I can't help the fact that I came up under David LaChapelle, who was always shooting A-list celebrities. Whether I like it or not, it has an effect on me. Being around people like Lorna Simpson, Christine Osinski and so many other people that I studied under at Cooper Union, they all have some kind of celebrity status. I find myself gravitating toward taking a class by artists who have some sort of recognition.

The whole social media thing, especially working in photography or media, if I am putting photographs out there and people are following it, I don't think I am trying to be a persona but the people who are interested in the work will see me that way anyway. I am not seeking it, but it is possible. But then again I have followers on Instagram who have way more followers than I do; they're not celebrities but they have this huge following. Social media right now is booming, and no one knows what is happening. So I think everyone is just kind of having fun with it.

HP: How do you see your exhibition interacting with Kehinde Wiley's "Economy of Grace"?

AE: I read this review of his on ArtInfo that was criticizing how there is a formula for him, or he has made a formula for himself. Kehinde is someone who I call a friend now and he is someone who I had to pay attention to while I was in school. A lot of people directed me to look at his work and I didn't want to but this year I finally started paying more attention, to understand where I fit in in history. I think on the major level I think we both speak the same language but we are saying two totally different things. I would lean toward that review in ArtInfo. It seems like Wiley is working in a terrain he is familiar with, the background is painted with this elaborate decorated motif. You have a black figure in this high Renaissance pose... With me it is a collaboration between me and the person who sits in for me.

I don't tell the person what to wear, how to be themselves. I might come across a person on the street or on Facebook or whatever, and I would approach them and say you have this look that I am drawn to. And from there I would ask them what they like, and get to know them a little bit. Then based on the information I gather from them I ask them to sit in for me and however they come dressed is how I photograph them. Often times I reference a painting as a catalyst, and that might result in them taking off their clothes... or whatever the case may be. But they're not, like, naked. They're in the nude. And those are two different things for me. For me, I want the person to still be there. It might serve as a portrait, it might serve as a work of art, I hope it serves as both. What that reviewer was saying about Wiley's work is that you don't get a sense of their personality in the portraits. I think that is the only difference between them that I can draw.

Awol Erizku's work will show at Hasted Kraeutler in New York until July 20.
