Generating Leads For Your Network Marketing Business | Debbie ...

It is commonly known that a straight line represents the shortest distance from one point to another; this article will assist you in finding the shortest route from your starting point in network marketing to your ending point, which is your ultimate goal of success in a large network. Make sure that you take heed of the advice presented in this article.

Blaze your own trail with network marketing. Be creative, and try to think of unique things that you can offer. This allows you to bring in more potential customers and gain an advantage over your competitors. Try to find a specific niche for your network marketing business, rather than copying someone.

Be honest with yourself about your intentions. Are you doing this as a hobby or to make a profit? Whatever your intentions are, just identify them ahead of time and enjoy the benefits that come from the amount of effort you decide to invest.

Prior to investing in any network marketing business, contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau). There are many legitimate companies out there, but there are also many bad ones. Prior to doing business, you need to investigate so that you can protect yourself. The BBB is a highly reliable source for determining if the business in which you?re interested in investing is on the up-and-up.

In order to be as successful as you can be with network marketing, you have to be open to new ideas. It?s just a better place to be in business.

A good customer database is crucial to the success of any network marketing campaign. You can purchase email lists or make your own from submissions and comments on your website. It is critical that you work on building this contact list of emails as you grow your business.

Try and emulate the characteristics of independent distributors when dealing with network marketing. Mimicking and thinking like these successful marketers will help you to become more successful.

A genuine desire to see others succeed with your help is important if you really want to be successful in network marketing. The success of others will increase your own success. You should strive to become a person that enjoys helping others succeed with their marketing.

Make small, specific goals to see the most enduring results. Even though your bigger business plan may be three to five years out, you need to evaluate your network marketing activities on cycles no more than ninety days long. This can help you tailor your more immediate plan to current needs, while still keeping you on target for reaching your longer-term plan.

If are new to your network marketing business, it is important that you remain patient. Many people get discouraged after just a short period of time. The first few months or weeks are vital to your business. Once your marketing strategy starts paying off, it will gain momentum and you can earn big profits.

When you have learned from your mistakes, you are in an excellent position to move forward to success. Keep track of your failures and be sure to understand them. Understanding your mistakes can help you to avoid making them again in the future, and helps you narrow your focus on what does work.

Your client may hear you for the first time on your answering machine, so do not underestimate the effect of your message. Make sure that your message is concise and positive. The best approach is to give the information that is necessary, then give an idea of how long it will take you to get back to the caller.

Let your down line know that you want them to participate and be communicative. Do they fear meeting new people? Maybe they are having problems? Encourage everyone in your network to share their questions and ideas with you and with the group as a whole. If you desire for your team to sit at the top of the ladder, make sure that they are all equally participating.

Emulate the people leading your organization. Try to pick up tips on how to model your business after their formulation to avoid common mistakes that can hurt your business.

If you want to earn some extra money by network marketing, make sure to choose companies that sell products that personally appeal to you. Your enthusiasm will be infectious, causing your potential buyers to find the products more appealing.

Receiving assistance via forums and other marketers can help keep you informed. These forums have novice marketers mixed with weathered veterans. People share their wisdom and experience, exchange stories and answer questions that rookies ask. Forums like these can also help to do some professional networking.

Without adequate information and advice, reaching your end goal can be like traveling down a long, winding road that leaves you too exhausted to celebrate if you ever do make it over the horizon. Make sure to implement the information you learn in this article to achieve success in network marketing.

Donald Trump on Kate Middleton Topless Pics: All Her Fault, Totally Fair Game!

The shocking release of Kate Middleton topless photos, taken from a distance while she was at a private villa in France, has sparked debate over the ethics of celebrity media coverage. Most people tend to sympathize with the Duchess of Cambridge here.

Donald Trump, however, is not most people.

In a series of Tweets, the blowhard opined that Middleton herself is to blame for the nude photos - she didn't have to strip down outdoors, after all!

Kate Middleton ClothedTrump Pic

“Kate Middleton is great, but shouldn’t be sunbathing in the nude, she has only herself to blame," writes Trump. "Who wouldn’t take Kate’s picture and make lots of money if she does the nude sunbathing thing. Come on Kate!”

Somehow we're guessing the British royal family disagrees.

The irate royals are exploring legal options to stop the spread of the Kate Middleton pics, and have already won an injunction against French gossip magazine Closer.

However, at least two other tabloids have run the pics - both in other nations not bound by the ruling - and that's just print media. The Internet is a different beast.

What do you think of Trump's statement? Is he for real? We know he likes to weigh in on whatever's trending, but does he have a valid point? Comment/vote below ...

Is Kate Middleton to blame for the scandal?

Chael Sonnen still training for Jon Jones, just in case

Chael Sonnen wants a fight with Jon Jones. He talked smack to the light heavyweight champ before Dan Henderson's pre-UFC 151 injury, he stepped up for a fight to try to save UFC 151, and he continued to needle Jones in the wake of UFC 151's cancellation.

Even now, with the fight less than a week away, he continues to train just in case Vitor Belfort pulls out of Saturday's UFC 152 bout. UFC president Dana White told USA Today that Sonnen is in fight camp.

"Chael Sonnen is in full training camp right now," White said. "He's been training since he got offered the Jones fight. He said, 'I'm in full camp right now because Vitor will get hurt and pull out, and it will be Jones vs. Sonnen, anyway."

Bravo, Chael. It's one thing to talk trash about how he will be ready in case Belfort pulls out of the fight with Jones. It's quite another to still train and prepare for a fight that isn't booked. That's not idle trash-talking.

Voters, Republicans React to Romney's Middle East Response

The ongoing anti-American protests in the Middle East have thrust the issue of foreign policy into the forefront of the current presidential election. Republican candidate Mitt Romney spoke out against the White House's initial response to the violence against Americans in Libya and Egypt, according to Yahoo! News. How are voters and fellow Republicans grading Mitt Romney's ability to handle foreign policy in light of his comments?

* Tom Ridge, who served as Secretary of Homeland security under George W. Bush, disagreed with Romney's assessment of the White House response, stating, "I don't think President Obama sympathizes with those who attacked us. I don't think any American does."

* Former Republican candidate Jon Hunstman criticized Romney for his remarks about the White House handling of the violence. He stated that Romney's campaign missed an opportunity to "Step up and begin, not through immediate criticism, but begin to articulate their vision for the Middle East, in terms of how we begin putting some of these pieces back together again," according to Politico.

* A recent NBC Poll shows that Obama leads Romney among voters in the key battleground states of Florida, Ohio, and Virginia on the issue of foreign policy.

* Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan echoed Romney's criticism of President Obama's handling of the violence against Americans, telling attendees at the Value Voter Summit that, "Amid all these threats and dangers, what we do not see is steady, consistent American leadership."

* Sen. Jim DeMint showed his support for Romney, saying, "Governor Romney is absolutely right, there is no justification for these deadly attacks and we should never apologize for American freedom," according to The New York Daily News.

* Sarah Palin took to Facebook to add her criticism of President Obama, saying, "Apparently President Obama can't see Egypt and Libya from his house," and "How's that Arab Spring working out for us now?"

* President Obama's campaign saw a bump in poll numbers in the wake of Mitt Romney's remarks. According to Real Clear Politics, Obama leads in all of the major national polls except for one. Obama's average lead is three points over his opponent.

SAfrica: $563M lost in gold, platinum production

MARIKANA, South Africa (AP) ? Detailing the heavy financial toll of unrest in South Africa's crucial mining sector, President Jacob Zuma said Monday that strikes have cost close to 4.5 billion rand (nearly $563 million) in lost gold and platinum production this year while a major company announced it is halting construction of a platinum mine shaft, putting 1,200 people out of work.

The strikes that have stopped work at seven gold and platinum mines also spread to the chrome sector, according to the South African Press Association. And police blocked politician Julius Malema, a diehard Zuma opponent, from addressing some 3,000 strikers gathered at a stadium at the Lonmin mine at Marikana, northwest of Johannesburg.

"Arrest him!" one officer ordered, giving Malema 20 minutes to leave or face arrest. This caused Malema to take off with his entourage.

"I'm leaving. We're getting out of here. Why are you chasing me? Are you going to shoot me?" Malema taunted, a reference to the police shooting of striking Lonmin miners, killing 34, on Aug. 16 in the worst state violence since apartheid ended in 1994.

Malema sprinted to his all-terrain vehicle and sped off. Police piled into two armored cars and two other vehicles and followed on muddy dirt tracks that wind through a tin-shack neighborhood with no water or electricity and where thousands of Lonmin's miners live. The police vehicles and a helicopter hovering above the politician's car checked that he left without speaking to any crowds. Police said they were preventing him from addressing an illegal gathering.

Church and opposition leaders condemned the state for its heavy-handed actions after police raided Lonmin mine hostels on Saturday and fired rubber bullets and tear gas to force people to stay home. Anglican Bishop Jo Seoka said it mirrored the force used years ago by the apartheid regime. The opposition Congress of the People party demanded the withdrawal of some 1,000 soldiers trucked over the weekend into the "platinum belt" 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg.

"Soldiers are meant to defend a nation not (act for) a company's benefit," Seoka told reporters.

Zuma, speaking to a trade union congress in Johannesburg, blamed miners' poor living and working conditions on the apartheid past and the failures of mining companies to honor a charter to improve the lives of miners. Zuma said mining companies are required to improve the housing and living conditions of workers and also to invest in skills development, racial equity in employment and ownership as well as local community development. He said violence must not become a culture of South African labor relations.

Zuma called for a speedy resolution to the mining strikes. He said the strikes this year have cost South Africa close to 4.5 billion rand (nearly $563 million) in lost gold and platinum production. Zuma told that this year's work stoppages have subtracted nearly 3.1 billion rand ($388 million) from the national treasury.

London-registered Lonmin PLC told The Associated Press the company is losing production of 2,500 ounces each day the strike continues. Lonmin said Monday it is halting work on a new shaft and will not require 1,200 contract workers, among some 10,000 contract workers employed at the mine along with 28,000 employees.

Aquarius Platinum said work resumed at its mine Monday, and Anglo American Platinum said it would restart operations Tuesday under police protection at its four mines. Anglo American is the world's largest platinum producer, Lonmin the third largest. South Africa holds 80 percent of world platinum reserves.

A strike leader said some miners at Samancor Chrome stopped work Friday demanding a minimum take-home pay of 12,500 rand ($1,560). The company said it had shut down operations voluntarily to protect workers from intimidation.

It is unclear how many miners are now striking. Mining companies claim it is a minority with tens of thousands of workers not reporting for duty because of violent threats and intimidation. Previous marches by strikers brandishing machetes, spears and clubs have numbered several thousand.

Lonmin said negotiations would continue Monday after strikers last week rejected an offer of 16 to 21 percent pay increases that fell far short of the demands of striking rock drill operators for a minimum monthly take-home pay of R12,500 ($1,560).

Bishop Seoko addressed strikers Monday and said he had won a new mandate to negotiate for a different, unspecified amount. "We are very optimistic," he said.

The chief economist of the Chamber of Mines, Roger Baxter, told Talk Radio 702 that the average rock drill operator earns an average monthly total before deductions of 11,689 rands ($1,460) which he said put those workers in the top 20 percent of all earners in South Africa. For comparison, Baxter noted that semi-skilled steel industry workers earn 4,000 to 5,000 rand ($500 to $625) a month. Deductions often account for half a worker's salary.

Pope makes peace appeal at open-air Mass in Beirut

BEIRUT (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI made a sweeping appeal Sunday for peace in Syria and the Middle East, decrying the violence "which generates so much suffering."

Speaking at an open-air Mass before a huge crowd, he urged the international community and Arab countries in particular to find a solution to end the conflict in neighboring Syria.

"Why so much horror? Why so many dead," Benedict said, lamenting that "the first victims are women and children."

With pilgrims from across the Middle East in the crowd he said Christians must do their part to end the "grim trail of death and destruction" in the region.

"I appeal to you all to be peacemakers," Benedict said.

Benedict spoke from an altar built on land reclaimed with debris from Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, pressing ahead with his call for peace and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman, said local organizers put the crowd at some 350,000 people.

Benedict said that justice and peace are needed in building "a fraternal society, for building fellowship."

The 85-year pope, wearing green vestments, appeared to be holding up well in the Mediterranean heat.

Helicopters flew overhead and soldiers set up roadblocks and patrolled streets in downtown Beirut.

The crowd cheered and waved tiny Vatican and Lebanese flags as Benedict arrived in his bullet-proof popemobile at the Mass site on the Beirut waterfront.

Benedict has been appealing for tolerance and religious freedom.

At a meeting with young people Saturday evening, the pope said he admired the courage of Syrian youth and that he did not forget their suffering.

The papal visit comes amid soaring sectarian tensions in the region, exacerbated by the conflict in Syria, which is in the throes of an 18-month-old civil war.

?wit Bakery & Cafe: This Bird Has Flown | Atlanta Food & Drink Blog ...

Be warned. This post is pointless. Or maybe post-pointless. It contains a never-published review written three months ago about a restaurant that closed three weeks ago.

You can stop reading now. Or you can read on if you like looking back on (restaurant) history and seeing signs of what would come to be. Three months ago, we decided not to run this review, which was ready to go to print, once ?wit?s owner told us off the record that changes were on the way and asked that we not write about the bakery/cafe for the time being. I did pen a little Omnivore post seeking readers? thoughts on the quandary of knowing that a review may be totally pointless in a few weeks time if the restaurant were to totally revamp. Our ever-friendly commenters responded with a resounding, ?who gives a flying flip??

So, you probably still don?t give a flying flip, but maybe now that we know ?wit will be replaced by the new West & Mill Bistro Bar, the management that has carried over from one incarnation to another can find a few nuggets of constructive criticism of their discarded caf? worth thinking about. (West & Mill's first service will be dinner tomorrow night, September 15) It sounds like ?wit's quasi-European concept will still apply to the new bistro, with Eastern European and French/Belgian influences, and maybe that will work better at night than it did in the AM. Pairing up with beer and cocktails rather than coffee may just do the trick. Or it may not. We shall see.

Back to the time machine we go...

Cheap Eats: ?wit Bakery & Cafe (now closed)

Three months old, ?wit Bakery & Cafe is a work in process, a freshman in search of the right major. Right out of the gate, its breads and pastries and welcoming space have turned curious visitors into fans. But ?wit?s management is already eager to shake things up. Maybe baked goods with a minor in Polish wasn?t the right path. Founder Ewelina Kieley is no longer involved. A liquor license has paved the way for wine and cocktails in the evening, and the dinner menu and dessert program to mesh with that are in the works. So consider the following a report card on a promising student who just might be changing majors next semester, or transferring to another college altogether.

Let?s start with the space. ?wit feels a lot like the room described in the Beatles? Norwegian Wood: the vaguely Scandinavian rustic chic feel, the warm pillows surrounding a fire. It?s a beautiful space that manages to be warm and open and airy - the kind of space you want to linger in. Like Norwegian Wood, ?wit starts off with intrigue. You see the bakery, you see the loaves of bread, you note all the space for lazy lounging, and you wonder where it?s going. Like other casual combos of this sort, the order-at-the-counter thing can also confuse. The menu is a little card next to the cash register, fighting for attention with all those pastries displayed nearby. You?re not sure what will be brought to the table, what you need to wait for at the counter. So you sit by the fire, biding your time, wishing for wine.

Despite the Norwegian feel, ?wit?s actual inspiration starts off due south of Scandinavia, in Poland. The name (pronounced ?shveet,? which seems straight out of a Saturday Night Live skit) is Polish for ?break of dawn,? certainly apropos for a bakery turning out pastries and sandwiches topped with over-easy eggs. While I don?t see Atlanta clamoring for a Polish menu, the presence of slightly exotic pastries such as jam-stuffed p?czki (Polish jelly donuts) and vaguely eastern European dishes like potato latkes is a welcome twist on the familiar. That?s not to say that the menu sticks to Poland ? there are Belgian fries, a Croque Madame, French toast and a turkey sandwich. Yes, the current menu flits a bit from here to there, in need of a bit more focus.

So far, at least, the focus should be more on the baked goods. The display of rustic loaves of bread stacked up behind the counter certainly draws the eye - thick, crusty, imperfectly shaped beauties of the sourdough, farm, and multi-grain varieties. They are uniformly quite good, if not quite best-in-class, with that sought-after synergy between soft center and crunchy exterior that fresh loaves should deliver. And much of the menu on the cafe side of things does indeed draw on the bread ? with sections for sandwiches and open-faced ?tartines.?

On the sweeter side of the bakery, the pastries are an excellent way to start the day, or brighten up an afternoon. The chocolate-drenched donut stands out, made with brioche dough for a texture that hits a pleasing balance of dense and airy. It?s the Valrhona 64% cacao dark chocolate ganache on top, though, that really makes this sing, with notes of bitter and sour and sweet and decadent. Isn?t it good? The pastry selections, though, have been relatively few each time I?ve visited. There?s room for more.

Of the other random things on the current menu, there are many mediocrities, though at least one delight. The delight is a plate of potato latkes. If Poland had its own Waffle House, they would make something like this in place of the ?smothered and covered.? ?wit?s latkes show a nice browned crunch around the edges, dotted with green onion inside, topped with a sprig of fresh dill and a plop of sour cream. Topped with a few slices of smoked salmon, this is the kind of dish ? simple, slightly unfamiliar, well-executed ? that more of the menu should emulate.

But the mediocrities? The Belgian fries and their accompanying sauces ? standard variations like truffle mayo and spicy ketchup ? are all serviceable, none are memorable. The fries lack the hallmark crunch of twice-fried Belgian fries. A ?spicy cucumber tartine? over multigrain bread is anything but spicy. Sure, the bread is lovely, as expected, but the thinly sliced carrot and cucumber need a foil more interesting than the simple sour cream below. Likewise, the Croque Madame misses the toasted over-the-topness that this sandwich should display. It needs more b?chamel, more cheese, more toast on the bread to become the indulgent mess it?s meant to be.

After all this intrigue ? the artisan breads, the puffy pastries, the Polish/Belgian/French menu - one still wonders where exactly ?wit is headed. It?s the bakery right now that shows the most promise, and all that Norwegian wood. Maybe ?wit can follow the lead of the Octane/Little Tart Bakeshop combo that has worked so well in Grant Park, a similarly airy space that shifts its focus from pastries and coffee to dishes and cocktails as the day progresses. Or maybe it?s simply that this concept won?t fly here (has this bird flown?). Whatever the case, hopefully this won?t end the way Norwegian Wood does ? in conflagration. It would be a shame to lose a good, quirky bakery just because the bread wasn?t enough.

Halloween Spiders on Our Front Door

Halloween is that one time of year we can take a real creative leap, and create a unique look for a front door.

And you know you?ll have an audience for your creations. There will most probably be crowds at every door for the annual walk around the neighborhood for yummy ?treats.? It?s also a perfect night to see neighbors that we don?t have an opportunity to see throughout the busy year.

I?m obsessed with wreaths and door decorations. And was inspired to create a spooky look for our front door with little rubber and plastic spiders.

Supplies:
Pack of plastic spiders
Foam sphere
Ribbon
Pipe cleaners
Adhesive*

1) Insert the six spider pipe cleaner legs into the styrofoam ball.
2) Cover the styrofoam with adhesive and stick the little spiders in a pattern to cover.
3) Tie the ribbon around the spider and hang it on a door, window, or on a mirror inside for extra spooky effect.

*I used Bondera, as it?s extra sticky and I could wrap the ball and peel back the lining as I worked, making the job easy and mess-free.

Stepmom Gives Toddler Breast Milk | Strollerderby

lanisoh with milk 300x225 Stepmom Gives Toddler Her Breast Milk, Doesnt See The Problem

Donating breast milk is a wonderful thing but, in this case, keep your milk to yourself!

Mom?s relationship with stepmom is a tricky one, at best. Very rarely is everyone all Bruce, Demi and Ashton about the business of combining families.

So maybe if you stole some woman?s guy and then married him maybe you should be keeping your breast milk to yourself. Just a suggestion. Or, if you?re ever the stepmom of my children, consider it an order.

I mean, duuuude.

In the forum over on CafeMom a woman poses the question of whether her friend should be upset upon discovering that her daughter?s stepmom gave the 3-year-old her breast milk. Apparently the friend had a baby with the guy, he cheated and left her for to marry the ?other woman?.? Now his new wife has a baby she is breastfeeding so she has frozen breast milk at home.

Here is how it went down (as posted on CafeMom messageboard):

Apparently dd was thirsty and there was nothing in the house to drink so they gave her Step moms frozen breast milk. Bf (best friend) didn?t find out until a relative told her. When she confronted Ex and Step mom, they acted like she was the crazy one. And to make matters worse. All of his family is 100% on his side.

Dude. You aren?t Salma Hayek and my kid ain?t starving to death. Give her some water and keep your breast milk to yourself. How is this even a question? Who knows what the stepmom has in her breast milk? And even if her milk is perfectly safe it is beyond inappropriate. A little too Hand That Rocks The Cradle for me, but maybe I?m overreacting? A growing number of women are buying breast milk online from strangers. But that?s mom?s choice. In this case she wasn?t given a choice.

What about you? How would you feel if you found out your toddler?s stepmom gave her breast milk?

(AP) ? When Republican Mitt Romney needs advice on international affairs, he turns to a small, ideologically varied group of longtime foreign policy hands and a handful of longtime loyal staffers.

And after hearing them out, Romney has typically taken a hard line, seizing on incidents abroad to criticize Democratic President Barack Obama. He's occasionally sidestepped calls for caution from some members of this select group. This week, he criticized Obama as a weak leader as unrest in Egypt was unfolding.

The group he talks to includes two former secretaries of state, two former ambassadors, one former senator and one who is still serving. Among them are former Missouri Sen. Jim Talent, Sen. John McCain, and former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and James Baker.

Wolf mange part of nature's cycle, ecologists say

ScienceDaily (Sep. 9, 2012) ? Mange and viral diseases have a substantial, recurring impact on the health and size of reintroduced wolf packs living in Yellowstone National Park, according to ecologists.

Following the restoration of gray wolves to Yellowstone in 1996, researchers collected blood from the animals to monitor parasite-induced disease and death. They also tracked the wolves in each pack to follow their survival and allow additional data-gathering.

"Many invasive species flourish because they lack their native predators and pathogens, but in Yellowstone we restored a native predator to an ecosystem that had other canids present that were capable of sustaining a lot of infections in their absence," said Emily S. Almberg, graduate student in ecology, Penn State. "It's not terribly surprising that we were able to witness and confirm that there was a relatively short window in which the reintroduced wolves stayed disease-free."

The researchers found that within a year after the wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, 100 percent of the wolves tested had at least one infection, but mange did not infect wolves living in the park until 2007.

"We can look at the biology of the diseases and predict which ones will come in first," said Peter J. Hudson, Willaman Professor of Biology and director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, Penn State. "What was surprising was that so many diseases came in so fast, but those were the ones we expected to come in first. It wasn't really a sequence, they were almost there immediately. That's very interesting in itself. "

The diseases that infected the wolves quickly were all viral, including canine distemper and canine parvovirus -- both contractible through bodily secretions. Mange, however, is a skin infection, caused by scabies mites, that makes the wolves scratch and lose fur. An infected wolf can lose enough body heat in the winter to freeze to death. Mange is spread by direct contact with another mite-infected animal or by contact with the mites themselves, as they can survive away from a host for several days, depending on the temperature.

"Where did those diseases come from?" asked Hudson. "Most of them initially came from other canid species, like coyotes or foxes. Wolves are animals that disperse far and move around fast, and once the wolves were established the diseases were spread from pack to pack."

Almberg and Hudson tracked how quickly mange spread from pack to pack after the disease entered the population. The number of infected wolves in a pack did not affect the likelihood of a neighboring pack to contract mange, but distance was a factor -- for every six miles of distance between an infected pack and an uninfected pack, there was a 66 percent drop in risk for the uninfected pack. Some wolves and packs were not severely affected by mange, while other packs were decimated, the researchers report in the current issue of Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B.

In January 2007, Mollie's pack was the first in Yellowstone to show signs of mange infection. As of March 2011, they had recovered. The Druid pack, which had been one of the most stable and visible packs in the park, according to Almberg, started to show signs of mange in August 2009.

"It was in a very short amount of time that the majority of the animals [in Druid] became severely infected," Almberg said. "The majority of their hair was missing from their bodies and it hit them right in the middle of winter. The summer before it got really bad, we saw that many of the pups had mange."

The Druid pack was gone by the end of the winter in 2010.

The researchers note that the wolf population in Yellowstone experienced several phases -- from 1995 to 2003 the wolves experienced rapid growth, from 2003 to 2007 the number of wolves stabilized, and the most recent data from 2007 to 2010 shows a decline.

"We're down to extremely low levels of wolves right now, we're down to [similar numbers as] the early years of reintroduction," said Almberg. "So it doesn't look like it's going to be as large and as a stable a population as was maybe initially thought."

Also working on this research were Paul C. Cross, disease ecologist, Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center; Andrew P. Dobson, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, Princeton University; and Douglas W. Smith, director, Yellowstone Wolf Project.

The research was supported through the U.S. Geological Survey/National Park Service Park-Oriented Biological Support (POBS); the Yellowstone Wolf Project of the National Park Service; and the National Institutes of Health, Research and Policy for Infectious Disease Dynamics (RAPIDD).

Scientist talks of hunt for signs of Mars life

The Mars rover Curiosity ? the centerpiece of NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission ? has 10 instruments to help it characterize the Martian environment and determine if the planet ever had the potential to support life.

One of these is the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument, or SAM. Roughly the size of a microwave oven, SAM ? actually a collection of three separate instruments ? will analyze samples taken by Curiosity's robotic arm, looking for carbon-based compounds.

MSL participating scientist Danny Glavin, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., is one of the SAM team members who will try to determine if the building blocks of life could ever have survived on the surface of Mars. Here, he shares his thoughts on SAM and its role in Curiosity's mission.

What kind of science do you generally do?
Glavin: At NASA-Goddard, I work with a team of researchers in the Astrobiology Analytical Laboratory. Half my time I spend analyzing meteorites and other materials from space. We've looked at samples returned from the Stardust comet mission, we study lunar samples and meteorites that are found in Antarctica, including meteorites from Mars.

And we're really focused on determining what kind of organic compounds are present in these materials, specifically focused on amino acids and nucleobases, which are the basic building blocks of life. So part of my time is spent working on that research, the meteorite stuff.

The other half of my time I'm devoting towards MSL and the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) experiment, where we've been working on a wet chemistry experiment that will target those same types of organic compounds found in some meteorites, the amino acids and nucleobases, through a chemical reaction with the soil and rock materials collected by the rover Curiosity on Mars. [11 Amazing Things Curiosity Can Do]

We've been optimizing that experiment for SAM and are pretty much chomping at the bit, waiting for the opportunity to study rock samples on Mars. So yeah, we're looking forward to the SAM wet chemistry experiments.

What do you do specifically for MSL?
Glavin: I'm an MSL participating scientist and a member of the SAM team, primarily focused on the GCMS ? gas chromatography-mass spectrometry ? analysis of organic compounds, if they're present in the Martian surface materials, and more specifically this wet chemistry experiment, which is basically a front end extraction for the GCMS analysis.

We need to prepare the solid samples in a way that extracts the organics from the minerals, which might include amino acids and nucelobases, in order to make these compounds volatile enough to make it through the GC and be detected by the mass spectrometer.

The Viking missions, which successfully put two landers on the Martian surface in 1976, both had GCMS instruments, but they didn't have this wet chemistry capability. Compounds like amino acids and nucleobases, the fundamental building blocks of life, would not have been detectable by the Viking instrument. This is really the first robust search for these compounds on Mars.

How could your work help to answer astrobiology questions?
Glavin: The goal of this mission is to assess the habitability potential of an environment on Mars. We're at the bottom of Gale Crater, and we're trying to determine whether or not that was or currently is a habitable environment. [Gale Crater Explained (Infographic)]

Of course, there are a lot of signs that point to that being the case ? otherwise we wouldn't have gone there. There was clearly water present at one time inside that crater; we see that evidence from orbit with the layers of clay minerals at the base of Mount Sharp inside the crater.

What I'm working on specifically, with respect to the Sample Analysis at Mars experiment, or SAM, is the ability to detect organic compounds in these materials. I think that's sort of the second step toward assessing habitability. The first is, was there water there ? liquid water ? available for prebiotic chemistry and possibly life?

    4. Clinton backs 100-Year Starship initiative

The second thing is, are there the basic elements of life ? carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfur ? and are there reduced forms of carbon, particularly organics? That's one of the key pieces of information that's currently been missing from Mars. We don't really have a good answer to that question yet. I'm hopeful that SAM will help us to understand whether or not organic compounds are present on Mars or not.

I think the discovery of organic compounds on Mars would be a big step for astrobiology. Whether or not those organic compounds came from life that was there at some point, or were delivered from space, finding organic compounds on the surface is important because it says the environment isn't so harsh that it's destroying them, that organic compounds can be preserved in some environments on the surface of Mars. I think that will certainly be one of the key questions that we're going to try to answer during this mission.

Liberty Ross 'totally terrified' on NY runway

By Us Weekly

Liberty Ross had everybody fooled during Alexander Wang's New York Fashion Week show Saturday.

Her calm, cool and collected -- not to mention, extraordinarily fierce -- exterior belied some serious nerves as she strutted her stuff during a surprise trip down the runway.

Liberty Ross, actress, model and the wife of "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders, presents a creation from the Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2013 collection during New York Fashion Week on Sept. 8.

PHOTOS: Kristen and Rupert's July 17 fling

"I was totally terrified," Ross, 33, confessed to The Cut?at the show's after party. "I hadn't actually been out of my house for seven weeks so I was really anxious. But it felt amazing." (Ross' pal, and the man of the hour, Alexander Wang, said asking the model to take part in his show was a no-brainer. He told the fashion site he invited her "Because I love her and I support her.")

PHOTOS: Kristen and Rupert's road to infidelity

While the British stunner's claims she's been a recluse recently were a bit exaggerated (Ross has been photographed out and about near her Los Angeles home over the last month or so), she's still reeling after learning in late July that her husband, director Rupert Sanders, cheated on her with his "Snow White and the Huntsman" star, Kristen Stewart.

Together for 10 years, Ross and Sanders, 41, have two children together, Skyla, 7, and Tennyson, 5. Currently, their marital status is still very much up in the air.

As a source close to the couple recently told Us Weekly, "It's too early to tell what will happen with them."

Meanwhile, Stewart is getting back to work as well; the "Twilight" star made her first public, post-scandal appearance Thursday night when she attended an "On the Road" screening at the Toronto Film Festival.

HBT: Nats' Strasburg upset about being shut down

Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post provides the quote:

?I don?t know if I?m ever going to accept it, to be honest,? Strasburg said Saturday. ?It?s something that I?m not happy about at all. That?s not why I play the game. I play the game to be a good teammate and win. You don?t grow up dreaming out playing in the big leagues to get shut down when the games start to matter. It?s going to be a tough one to swallow.?

Strasburg admitted he was hoping the Nats would adjust their plan as the summer went on, especially as the team?s overall record improved. But general manager Mike Rizzo did not budge.

?I was always thinking things were going to change,? concluded the 24-year-old right-hander in his chat with reporters on Saturday afternoon. ?But this is a decision they made well before the start of the year. I play for the Washington Nationals. I play to help this team win games. I?m not the one making the calls.?

It?s the kind of attitude you?d expect from an ace. And he should be a force to reckon with in 2013.

We Have All Become Parallel Gamers

Journeying in ParallelIf you really want to become a hated figure in GamerVille, predict the doom of single player games. This is territory that Frank Gibeau from Electronic Arts inadvertently strayed into this week when he declared that he now only commissions games that connect to the cloud. The gaming press in general read this as EA saying it would no longer make single player games like Mass Effect, and went crazy. And yet Gibeau is right. Single player gaming all by itself is slowly slipping into the past, to be replaced by something else. Not some half-dreamed half-TED-talk fueled craziness about constant gaming in the future instead of life, but something connected nonetheless. Something hard to pin down, but which is definitely real. Some sort of ambient connection which brings the game together for players and makes it just that little bit more of a world. In two words: parallel games.

As Mitt Romney's convention closes, the buzz in Germany is about Paul Ryan

The Republican focus, of course, was the official nomination of Mitt Romney for president. But Germany appears more interested in his choice of running mate.

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and vice presidential nominee, Rep. Paul Ryan (l.) wave to delegates during the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, Aug. 30.

After the last balloon fell at the Republican convention in Tampa, Fla., last night, German media delivered their verdict on the now-official Romney-Ryan ticket. Despite the fact that the convention focused on the crowning of Mitt Romney, it was really his sidekick, Paul Ryan, that grabbed German attention.

As Mr. Romney has been campaigning for years to get his shot at the White House, he is a well-known name in Germany. His big acceptance speech, however, still hit the news, given that he is the one challenging President Obama, who is still highly popular overseas.

The Munich based Sueddeutsche Zeitung gave Romney credit for a solid speech, but summed up its take with its headline: "Romney wants to take America back to the past." The weekly Die Zeit was less polite, wondering in its online election blog: "who the hell has written that speech for Romney?" It gave him only 5 out of 10 possible points for his performance.

But much of the comment was about Ryan. Germany is still trying to figure out who that 42-year-old politician with the college boy look is ? and what influence he would have in a potential Romney administration.

The daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung stated what many thought: that Paul Ryan is a far better speaker than Romney. Spiegel Online comments in its editorial that Ryan is "more dangerous than Sarah Palin" because his ideas would be a declaration of war on America's social welfare. The Hamburg-based online publication showed concern that Ryan could lead the Republican party more to the right for years to come, even if team Romney-Ryan fails at winning the White House.

'Ryan is the real king'

The business paper Handelsblatt made an even stronger statement, suggesting that once in the White House, the Romney/Ryan administration could become more of a "Ryan/Romney presidency." The Berlin daily Der Tagesspiegel drew a similar conclusion, saying that Ryan could become the next president in 2016 if Obama wins over Romney: "Ryan is the real king."

Concerns about Ryan's ideas aside, he is regarded as a smart politician and is given credit for at least having a plan for solving the economic crisis (even if it's not well received) ? which German commentators so far don't see in the Romney campaign.

The birdy smell of a compatible partner

ScienceDaily (Sep. 7, 2012) ? New evidence shows that birds may choose their mate with the help of smell. They prefer a dissimilar mate because this gives their young a more efficient immune system. This has been shown in a new study by researchers from Lund University in Sweden, in a Swedish-French collaboration.

Humans and many animals can choose a suitable mate by smell. Choosing a mate with the right smell can give the offspring an efficient immune system. This is because each individual's smell can be said to reflect information on the individual's genes. By finding the mate whose genes best match one's own, the chances are higher that offspring will have greater resistance to a range of parasite attacks and other diseases.

Unlike many animals, birds have been considered to have a poor sense of smell, but there are exceptions. Blue petrels are Antarctic seabirds with an unusually good sense of smell. They can recognise their mate and their nest using smell alone, and return to their nests under cover of darkness. A group of scientists, including researchers from Lund University, have now shown that the nose of the blue petrel is even capable of smelling which mate will produce young with the best immune systems.

"The study is a collaboration between researchers here in Lund and researchers in France. My contribution has been my knowledge of how to identify and compare genes from different individuals," says Maria Strandh, a researcher at the Department of Biology at Lund University.

Blue petrels are long-lived and monogamous birds.
