Jonah Lehrer: A cautionary tale for today's overachiever

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Jonah Lehrer, the new Icarus of the literary digital age, should have known better. A best-selling author with thrilling insights into the mind's most mysterious moments has at the age of 31 fallen, overnight, from fame to infamy.

After admitting that he cobbled together Bob Dylan quotes, misused other ones and then lied about it, Lehrer's brief, glittering career as a literary star is over. He has lost his new job at The New Yorker, embarrassed his "Imagine: How Creativity Works" publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and shredded his credibility, probably irretrievably.

How could such a thing happen? It's another cautionary tale for the age of the overachiever.

Lehrer the Rhodes Scholar, the neuroscientist, the journalist was doing too much, too fast, at too high an RPM.

What's a young, literary stud to do? Which incredible perch should a young writer give up? His biweekly column in the Wall Street Journal weekend edition? His coveted spot as a reporter at The New Yorker? His book tour? That speaking gig at the Aspen Ideas festival?

Even the brilliant Lehrer couldn't keep it up. He found himself lifting from one column to fill another. He cut and pasted passages from his book to pad his New Yorker work. High-placed critics found his work simplistic, repetitive, derivative. But finally, his work was just unforgivably sloppy.

A sharp-eyed reporter at Tablet, Michael C. Moynihan, began to persistently ask questions until Lehrer admitted he could not locate the sources for the Dylan quotes that were the driving force of his argument in "Imagine."

"?It's a hard thing to describe,'" Lehrer claims Dylan said about writing his famous rock anthem, "Like a Rolling Stone." "?It's just this sense that you got something to say.'"

It turns out Dylan never said that, or at least Lehrer can't find a source. And he told Moynihan one lie after another, trying to cover his tracks.

I interviewed Lehrer in April - a fascinating hour-long discussion that now makes me very sad.

"I'm a Bob Dylan fanatic," Lehrer told me. "I obsessively listen to his music. If you read enough biographies, his Playboy interview from 1966, he talks candidly of how sick he was of himself, his music, his manager. He goes up to Woodstock."

"He's incredibly eloquent about his process," he told me. But, in fact, Dylan's most salient quotes have no provenance.

I sought Lehrer out after hearing about his book from three different sources (including my son's 18-year-old friend Kevin, who came barreling through the door with a burning need to talk about "Imagine"). I asked the writer if he had become the Zeitgeist.

"I believe overexposed is the technical word," he said with charming humility. "God forbid I'm the Zeitgeist. It's weird, I'm in a book-tour bubble, I look at the itinerary, show up at various radio stations and talk until the self-loathing is very thick."

But not nearly as thick as it must be today. Though a scolding is what Lehrer deserves for his sloppy work, I cannot help but pity him.

There is precious little protection out there for young writers in the atomized digital age. Few places to learn the basic craft of fact-based reporting, checking sources, double-checking footnotes.

The cut and paste function is a dangerous temptation to the overstretched writer, and has wrecked more than one career. Lehrer's is only the latest.

Meanwhile, here's the dirty secret that all authors know: publishers do not protect their authors by checking their sources or their facts. That onus lies with the writer.

Publishers, who count every penny, have not changed this despite the debacles of James Frey's factitious "A Million Little Pieces," and Quentin Rowan's plagiarism-filled "Assassin of Secrets," the latter having been reported on extensively earlier this year in The New Yorker.

Then there was Herman Rosenblat's canceled 2009 Holocaust memoir, "Angel at the Fence: The True Story of a Love That Survived," which was also fabricated.

It's hard to start at the top, and I think it's a mistake to do so. Lehrer did. And this may be death for a young writer.\

Lehrer may be a brilliant talent, but we're unlikely to discover many more of his insights, since he is now unlikely to find a publisher of note to take him on.

What a waste. Talent combined with ambition, mixed with the ravenous maw of internet-era publishing, the impossible margins of publishers who value profit over accuracy and the path to fame paved with all the right credentials. Just not enough experience.

It's a heady, toxic combination. It has claimed its latest victim, but certainly not its last.

Idaho may be too late on insurance exchange - Spokesman.com ...

Idaho Insurance Director Bill Deal addresses the Legislature?s Health Care Task Force on?Monday.
(Full-size photo)

BOISE - It may already be too late for Idaho to set up a state-run health insurance exchange in time to meet federal deadlines, state Insurance Director Bill Deal told lawmakers Monday.

?We?ve not been given the direction to move forward,? Deal told a joint task force of the Idaho Legislature. ?So now our timelines are getting to the point that, is it realistic that we could put together a state-based exchange at this particular time??

A year ago, Gov. Butch Otter pushed for a state-run exchange to keep the state in charge of its insurance market as health care reforms take effect, and his administration received a $20.4 million federal grant to start planning for the exchange. But state lawmakers turned away the money, hoping instead that the U.S. Supreme Court would overturn the health care reform law; instead, it upheld it.

Now, Otter has convened two working groups to study options for a health insurance exchange and whether Idaho should opt into a federally funded Medicaid expansion; the groups start meeting in the next week and a half and will give Otter their recommendations by fall.

In Washington, by contrast, the state is hard at work on its own state-run exchange, and in May received a $128 million federal grant to start it up.

Deal told the Idaho Legislature?s Health Care Task Force on Monday that he?s already decided to pass on the next federal grant opportunity, which has a mid-August deadline. Idaho?s next chance at applying for federal funds to start an exchange would be in November - the same month in which all states have to have decided on their exchange plans.

He suggested the state might want to consider a ?partnership? exchange - a third option, beyond a state-run or fully federally-run exchange, in which the state and federal governments would share duties. He noted that the national law lets states decide each November if they want to change course on their exchanges.

?So many states are considering this partnership thing as a way to get started, a way to fund an exchange, and then down the road, 2015, 2016, they can put together an exchange, move in a different direction, go with a state-based operation,? Deal said.

Some legislative leaders were unconvinced. ?A lot of the rules applying to this new law are being written as we speak - there?s so much gray area,? said Rep. Gary Collins, R-Nampa, task force co-chairman. Collins said he thought the feds would likely ease their deadlines.

Sen. Dean Cameron, R-Rupert, the Senate co-chairman of the task force, said, ?I don?t think it?s too late. ? I think they very well could back the deadline off. I think it?s all still up in the air.?

Sen. John Goedde, R-Coeur d?Alene, who like Cameron and Collins is an insurance broker, said, ?In the traditional manner that you?d expect a state exchange to be implemented, I don?t think there?s enough time. But there may be an off-the-shelf opportunity.?

Goedde said he?s looking into reports that other states have found vendors from whom they can ?rent? an exchange, though Deal said he was unaware of that. Goedde also noted that Alaska commissioned a study that recommended that state transition to a state-run exchange several years down the line.

Cameron said if Idaho were to look at a partnership, it should look at partnering with another state, like Utah, that?s already started work on an exchange, rather than with the federal government.

?Because the Legislature failed to act, we put ourselves in a little bit of a bind - we made our job more difficult,? Cameron said. ?But it doesn?t mean that we can?t still do our job.?

Deal said going with a federally operated exchange - the default if Idaho does nothing - would mean giving up a substantial amount of the state?s authority to regulate its insurance market.

Federal officials are currently anticipating they?ll have to run health insurance exchanges for lots of states - ?as high as 30,? Joy Wilson of the National Conference of State Legislatures told the task force by phone on Monday from Washington, D.C. ?So if you have particular issues in your state, whether it?s geography or special populations or just something that is unique about your state, the likelihood that that will get addressed is diminished if it?s a federally facilitated exchange, because they just can?t do customization.?

She added, ?It kind of depends on how comfortable you are with HHS (U.S. Health and Human Services) having that big a role in your insurance market. I think it really comes down to if you can find solace in that or not.?

That drew a murmur from the crowd of about 75 onlookers at the task force meeting, which included many lobbyists and representatives of various parts of the health care industry.

Sen. Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, said he?s not convinced there could be much state autonomy in a state-run insurance exchange anyway, because it would have to comply with federal rules. Plus, he said he likes the idea of forcing the federal government to go to work on lots of state exchanges, with the idea that it will slow them down. ?That gives us more time to repeal the whole thing,? he?said.

Easy To Learn, Simple Email Marketing Tips To Help Grow Your ...

Contrary to what many people will tell you, email marketing is far from being dead. Email marketing has been used by Internet marketers for years to make money, and they?ve been successful! The main reason that several people are not successful with their email marketing camapaign is because there are not taking the necessary steps to do it in the proper way. Hopefully the information and tips in this article will help you create a good email marketing plan and raise your rate of conversion. If you are new to IM, then approach List Profit Sniper along with its many components carefully so you will be able to realize maximum leveraging opportunities. One thing worthy of note is the difference in the attitudes business owners bring to the table. We have to speak in general terms, and with that we do believe that low-performing businesses will usually be run by those who do not have optimal attitudes that translate into behavior. We tend to believe that only a certain percentage of people will realize how important attitude and belief are and will actively address it. If you have failed one hundred times over the years, well ? things are not over yet; you know a little more and can learn the rest. Options; we all have them whether you choose to believe that or not.

Of first importance, be sure to use a subject line that is attention getting and captivating. Remember, you don?t have a long time to catch the reader?s attention, only a few seconds and that?s all. If you fail to get their attention, your email will either get ignored or deleted. This is why your subject line needs to specify a particular benefit that entices the recipient and forces him/her to open your mail. For instance, a person may dismiss a message with a subject line reading ?Weight Loss Tips?, but open one with the subject ?10 Weight Loss Tips That Can Help Your Shed Your Pounds.? It?s important to immediately begin the email with some really interesting content. Why is this important? Many widely used email clients such as Yahoo! Mail, Microsoft Outlook, etc. have a ?preview pane? that allows a reader to view just a narrow strip of an email message without actually opening it. In addition, you need your efforts to remain consistent throughout your email marketing campaigns. You have to ensure your email is sent regularly on the time specified to your subscribers. For instance, if you agree to send a newsletter on Wednesdays at 1 pm, do exactly that. Your supporters will be waiting and expecting your email then and you do not want to keep them waiting. Doing so will show them that you are serious and will be more likely to open any promotional emails you send to them. Consistency is an important trait, which demonstrates your professionalism, when it comes to your dealings with your email subscribers.

Next, you should be sure that the emails you send are actually going to the intended receiver, and are not just being put in their spam folder. Observe your subject line and see if it will work in the proper way. Spam filters don?t like certain words and if you have them in your subject line, consider your email trashed. Do not use words such as, Earn Money, FREE, etc. Finding information on additional words to watch out for is just a Google search away. You?ll find sites that will have whole lists for your review. They?ll even show you how you?re doing by providing a ?spam score.? Apart from the subject line, the actual content of the email also shouldn?t contain these spam trigger words. When it comes to your email content, there are other concerns too. You need to be careful of the links you include. A domain that is extensively promoted may end up in the spam folder also. And when the spam filters detect these sites, your mail will once again end up in the junk folder. But there is a workaround to this, and that is to cloak your links with another domain so that you can fly under the radar. All in all, email marketing is made of many important elements, and you have to focus on each one of them. Remember that writing a good email is just the first step. Creating your mailing list and developing a spam-proof message are also very important things to consider. By focusing on these elements, you will most definitely get the most out of your email marketing campaigns.

More than 20,000 people killed in Syria revolt: NGO

More than 20,000 people have been killed in Syria since the start of an anti-regime revolt in March 2011, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

"At least 20,028 people, among them 13,978 civilians and rebels, 968 army defectors and 5,082 members of the regime forces have been killed since the start of the revolt on March 15 of last year," Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Britain-based Observatory, told AFP by phone.

The Observatory counts people who have taken up arms as civilians and keeps a separate tally for army defectors.

At least 90 people were killed across Syria on Saturday, including 29 in northern Aleppo, the country's commercial capital, where regime forces battled rebels in a long-anticipated assault.

In the past week, at least 100 people have been killed every day, including on Friday, when at least 148 people were killed, according to the watchdog's figures.

It is impossible to verify death tolls in Syria. The United Nations stopped counting the casualties of the bloody conflict at the end of 2011.

Golan Druse start to turn against Syria's Assad

BUKATA, Golan Heights (AP) ? The raging civil war just across the cease-fire line in Syria is posing an uncomfortable political choice for the Druse people in the Israeli-annexed Golan Heights.

Do they maintain their traditional loyalty to the government of Bashar Assad, whose family has vowed to take back the territory? Or should they support the burgeoning Arab revolt against Assad's harsh rule?

In the shifting sands of the Middle East, the Druse again find themselves a people caught in the middle.

In Druse villages close enough to hear the fighting, families and friends are divided between backers of the revolt and supporters of the regime. A Druse doctor predicted his people would demand Assad's downfall, while a butcher in a nearby town denounced the Syrian uprising as a foreign conspiracy.

Israel captured the Golan from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war. In 1981 it annexed the strategic plateau, 65 kilometers (40 miles) long and 20 kilometers (12 miles) wide, because militarily, it commands Israel's north. The international community has not recognized the Israeli annexation. In negotiations, Israel has offered to exchange the territory for full peace, but talks broke down a decade ago over exact borders and other issues.

The Druse residents of the Golan Heights were offered Israeli citizenship, but only a few accepted. Many assumed that someday the territory would revert to Syria, by peace or by war, and those who identified with Israel might be treated as traitors.

The Druse ? there are 20,000 in the Golan Heights ? follow a secretive offshoot of Islam whose adherents live primarily in Syria, Israel, Lebanon and Jordan. Over the centuries, they have tried to keep to themselves, offering allegiance to whoever was in control of their territory.

The four main Golan Druse villages are near the cease-fire line with Syria. In the early weeks of the uprising against Assad last year, Golan's Druse staunchly lined up behind him. Now new voices are being heard.

"Most of the people here cannot distinguish between Assad and their homeland. They are looking to him as the face of the homeland and waiting for him to liberate us from the (Israeli) occupation," said Ali Abu Awad, a doctor in the village of Bukata. "But these days, when they can see what Assad is doing there, the big lie has started to fall. I think they will demand the fall of Assad."

Over the past week, he said most people in Bukata have climbed nearby hills to watch the fighting nearby.

"It's a different feeling to see with your eyes. You feel very useless, very empty, to see this army demolishing the civilian population," Abu Awad said.

In nearby Majdal Shams, Assad supporters spoke out.

Hasan Fakhr Deen, a butcher, called the Syria conflict "a conspiracy of outside states."

He insisted that Syrians remained united and felt the nearby shelling and smoke across the border were legitimate attacks against "people who want to change the regime in Syria."

Besides its strategic importance, the Golan Heights are also a major source of water and recreation. Israelis flock there for hikes, an Israeli winery and the country's only ski resort.

The Druse are a part of that landscape, and Israeli tourists as well as soldiers frequent their restaurants.

Still, the Druse stay in touch with their Syria relatives and are sometimes allowed to cross over for weddings, university studies and religious pilgrimages. Golan-grown apples are also annually transferred over land to Syria to help Druse farmers market their crop.

The bloody crackdown in Syria has led the Golan Druse to begin speaking more freely.

Mahmoud Amasha, a Bukata apple farmer and insurance agent, said he was "convinced that the number of people opposing this regime grows every day."

But he said divisions over Assad's popularity in Bukata have "cast a shadow over the people in this town."

Syria's Sunni majority makes up the backbone of the opposition, and minorities such as the Druse and Christians fear they will be marginalized ? or even targeted ? if Sunnis take over.

Assad and the ruling elite also belong to a minority sect, the Alawites, a Shiite offshoot. Assad's regime always pushed a secular ideology, which was seen as giving minorities a measure of protection.

Residents say demonstrations break out every few weeks, some in favor of the regime and some against. The divisions have even pitted family against family and friend against friend.

Three teenage girls walking through Bukata's central square held differing views, with two supporting Assad and one opposing him.

Ruba Amasha, 17, said the three have remained friends, but that is not always the case.

"For instance, a pro-Assad person will say 'hi' to a friend on the street, and if the other person's against (Assad), they'll just keep walking," she said.

Alaa Alwely, a driver, said the Syrian civil war would likely delay any chance of the Golan returning to Syria. Given what was happening across the border, he said he was fine with that.

"I've lived a respectful life here," he said. "I was born under occupation. I'm not sure if Syrian rule would be better or not."

(AP Photo) CHINA OUT

(AP) ? The wife of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai has agreed to be defended by two government-appointed lawyers in the murder case against her, two different lawyers with knowledge of the case said Saturday. Her decision could be the latest sign that a resolution to her case is near.

Gu Kailai's lawyers are based in Anhui province, where her trial is to be held. It is hundreds of kilometers (miles) from Chongqing city, where Gu is alleged to have killed a British businessman and where her husband, Bo Xilai, was the Communist Party boss until earlier this year.

A lawyer close to the case said Gu and her family have accepted the court appointment of Anhui lawyer Jiang Min, a director of the provincial lawyers' association, as her defense lawyer, along with a second lawyer, Zhou Yuhao of Wuhu, another Anhui city.

The lawyer did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the case. Another lawyer with knowledge of Gu's case, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Jiang would represent Gu but did not know the name of her second lawyer.

Jiang and Zhou could not be reached for comment Saturday.

The government announced Thursday that Gu and a family aide had been charged with murdering Neil Heywood, a British businessman with whom the Bo family had close ties. Chinese authorities are now also expected to quickly move ahead with the trial, which has overshadowed preparations for a once-a-decade political transition later this year.

Bo had been expected to be part of the transition until a fall from power earlier this year after his former police chief fled to a U.S. consulate and divulged suspicions that Gu was involved in Heywood's death. Three months ago, the government announced that Gu and Zhang Xiaojun, the family aide, were being investigated and that Bo was being suspended from the powerful Politburo for discipline violations that were not detailed.

Bo remains under a separate, party investigation for unspecified wrongdoings. There have been no clear signals yet on what China's leaders plan for him.

Also unclear is why Gu's case is being heard in the central city of Hefei when Heywood died in Chongqing. But there are precedents for trials of politicians to be held in cities outside their power bases. The 2008 corruption trial of former Shanghai party boss Chen Liangyu was held in Tianjin.

Carl Minzer, a China law and governance expert at the Fordham Law School, said Gu's acceptance of government-appointed lawyers may indicate behind-the-doors negotiations.

When announcing the charges against Gu and Zhang, Xinhua made clear the government considers the verdict a foregone conclusion. "The facts of the two defendants' crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial," the report said.

If found guilty of intentional homicide, Gu and Zhang face punishment ranging from more than 10 years' imprisonment to life in jail or the death penalty.

Probably in preparation for Gu's trial, French architect Patrick Devillers arrived in China last week from Cambodia, where he had been living. Devillers reportedly knew Gu and Bo when Bo was mayor of the northeastern city of Dalian in the 1990s. Devillers told French diplomats that he was traveling to China to assist in an investigation.

Travelocity fined $180,000 for advertising violation

Regulators have fined Travelocity $180,000, alleging the online travel agency failed to show consumers the full price of some fares displayed on its website.

The Department of Transportation said Friday it said that an investigation in September 2011 found that Travelocity's "flexible dates tool" did not always include fuel surcharges that were part of many international airfares.

Also, full prices were only found on the final page before purchasing some itineraries. Those choices required a paper ticket, which cost extra.

At the time of the alleged violation, the only extra costs airlines or agents were allowed to leave out were government taxes and fees. The Department implemented a rule in January that requires sellers to display fares that include those.

Creepy robot baby now creepier with torso and floppy arms

10 hrs.

A robot baby being built as part of a neuroscience research program in Japan has just gotten a torso, including arms that flop around like an infant?s sans swaddle.

Affeto, the robo-baby, is creepy in its realism, which is what the team from Osaka University aims to accomplish as they use robotics to study ?how humans? higher cognitive functions develop,? according to a project description.

Ultimately, the robot will be used in behavioral experiments. For now, the researchers are trying to ?build a realistic child robot with a muscle-skeletal system.??

The torso?s flexibility comes from 22 pneumatic actuators in its body.

In the video below you can see that Affeto?s torso is approaching the realistic stage. At one point, it hits itself in the face with ?babyish looseness,? Endgadget notes.?

The robot?s face has the thousand-mile stare of a well satiated or exhausted infant, but that may be because the team has yet to pair the torso with the robotic head, which was demonstrated in Feb.?2011.

Stay tuned.

The Law of Attraction, is it genuine? | Online SR22 Insurance Quotes ...

Is Steve Pavlina?s Law of Attraction just a bunch of tree-hugging, granola-eating, all-we-need-is-love, hippie-era mumbo-jumbo? ?Objective reality?, ?subjective reality?, ?singular consciousness?, ?lucid dreaming?? Yeah, that all sounds a bit ?hippie? but what is the Law of Attraction all about? The Law of Attraction simply says that you attract into your life whatever you consider. ~Steve Pavlina-The Law of Attraction

Also, in short the law is about personal responsibility! Steve states in his post Responsibility as well as the Law of Attraction? ?Responsibility for our lives is something we never shed but which we usually deny. As I?ve said numerous times ahead of, it is possible to give away handle but never ever responsibility. The ultimate responsibility for how your life turns out rests with you and you alone? not along with your parents, your boss, your ex, your society, God, or anyone else. You can blame whomever you wish, but you?re the one particular who need to expertise (or endure) the results?. ~Steve Pavlina

He goes on to say in his report that he typically receives e-mail from ?people stuck within the pattern of considering what they do not want?. Steve explains that even though folks say they may be focused on what they want, they don?t see their ambitions being manifest in their life.

He provides an instance from the statements individuals make as to why they feel they are not manifesting their ambitions,

?If I had been to write a template for such emails, it would look one thing like this:

I don?t understand?

I?m frustrated that?

I hate my?

I cannot determine ?

I?m stressed about?

I?m worried that?

I must be in a position to? but I can?t?

Why am I possessing so significantly trouble?

That?s quite a list of intentions, isn?t it? And needless to say this can be precisely what the individual is manifesting. What?s missing, nevertheless, is the fact that s/he hasn?t accepted responsibility for these results?. ~Steve Pavlina

So we are able to see his point, that when the ?Law of Attraction?, which Steve states ?.?brings you what you think of. To assume is to ask. Each and every thought is an intention?, holds accurate, then it gives a plausible purpose why a great deal of men and women wouldn?t manifest their desired goals. Steve is extremely direct with his conclusion, ?If you take into consideration what you need, you get it. In case you think about what you don?t want, you get that too?. Once more he states ?By assuming responsibility for making my reality, I also assume the power to modify it?.

Frustration and skepticism is really a reality in everyone?s life and features a paralyzing effect. Steve states that, ?One with the factors I?m so pleased and passionate about my life is the fact that I?m finding better at aligning myself with all the Law of Attraction. I?m obtaining a wonderful time experimenting with it?.

You will find some practical exercises that Steve recommends when a person is feeling frustration, ?Even when your desires haven?t however manifested, stay hopeful and optimistic. Pour on the good intent, and enable the Law of Attraction to function with you. Keep inside the present moment. Be on the lookout for synchronicities. In case you begin finding frustrated, take a walk or do a meditation to nip it in the bud. Otherwise you will negate your desires by intending their opposite?. ~Steve Pavlina

Steve has used his ideas all all through his profitable business ventures but surprisingly his search for personal growth and development came even though he was sitting in a jail cell inside the early 90?s. Steve decisively believes that with the proper point of view you can attract whatever you genuinely want, and by employing his tactics inside the Law of Attraction he will likely be able to show you how you can believe and be powerful when trying to accomplish your ambitions.

L.O.A. will assist you in achieving your ambitions, and allow you to overcome once they appear ? and everybody knows we?re going to have difficulties. By preserving positivity and understanding the L.O.A. strategy to by-passing obstacles is itself a part of self-improvement and personal development. You?ve got two avenues, to progress or fail.

Do you?ve got ambitions or have you been just going thru the motions each day undertaking what you will need to do with no program in location? A single quite basic tip that Steve shows is if you genuinely want a thing, to firstly focus in your intended desire. Saying you want a brand new house won?t get you anyplace closer to having a new house, but by getting set goals in the forefront of your mind, will drive you to stay focused and take good action within your business, making your targets an achievable reality.

That?s how entrepreneurs feel every single day, and with Steve Pavlina?s Law of Attraction you will be able to attain a mindset to assume like they do.

Malaysian giant MOL enters Australia's online gaming space with ...

The real-action, online gaming is the fastest-growing segment of the market. In fact, by 2014, online games will itself be a billion-dollar market, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers? projection.

So, it?s not a huge surprise to see some M&A action in this space as companies jostle for market share.

Recently, Ocash, the Australian startup, acquired OnlineGamez Australia, a distributor of online game credits in Australia and New Zealand. This week,?Malaysian Internet payments giant MOL Global announced the acquisition of a majority stake in Ocash itself.

?This is a significant step for MOL to continue to build and strengthen its business strategy across the Asia Pacific region,? said Craig White, president of MOL Global.

White said the partnership would ?provide more business opportunities for our region?s game developers and publishers as they will be able to extend their reach via MOL to consumers outside the Asian region.?

MOL is one of the largest online payment providers in the world. It has more than 600,000 physical and online payment channels, besides partnerships with over 150 online game publishers and social networks worldwide including Facebook, Zynga and Electronic Arts.

Ocash founder Budi Handoko has been named the chief executive of MOL Australia, and will power the company?s growth Down Under.

?We identify ourselves in line with the vision of MOL and the synergy between both organisations will allow our businesses to reach new heights,? said Handoko, an online game specialist. ?At the same time, our growing player community will be able to gain new secured channels to purchase various popular digital products such as Facebook Credits, as well as be introduced to MOL?s huge portal of international and Asian games.?

Ocash has specialised in processing payments for online games credits in the Australia and New Zealand markets. Its flagship product ? ocash points ? is a virtual credit utilised by online game enthusiasts to purchase popular game credits from various game publishers.

PricewaterhouseCoopers predicts consumer spending on games in Australia will increase to $1,584 million in 2014, mainly on the strength of growth in online games and wireless games. Estimated compound annual growth in consumer spending for online games (13.6%) and wireless games (13%) for 2010-2014 is significantly higher than that for consoles and handheld devices (5.8%).

Proposed Bailout Money Not Enough: Credit Crisis in Spain ...

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012
By Michael Lombardi, MBA for Profit Confidential

?

In two days this week, the Spanish stock market fell a staggering 12%. Why?

The Bank of Spain confirmed this week what everyone already knew: that gross domestic product (GDP) contracted at a 0.4% rate in the first quarter of 2012. And although the numbers are not available for the second quarter, we know the recession worsened from the first quarter. Estimates show that GDP contracted by 1.0% in the second quarter for Spain, with more austerity measures to come.

This contraction is forcing home prices to fall further in Spain. As I?ve been detailing, dear reader, the Spanish banks are saddled with mortgage debt. That debt continues to lose value, because home prices continue to fall, further exacerbating the credit crisis.

Home prices in Spain have fallen 30% since 2008, but they have fallen another 12.8% just in the first quarter of 2012!

Since GDP growth in Spain contracted by more in the second quarter, we can assume with certainty that home prices continued to fall, making debt at the Spanish banks worth that much less, inflaming the credit crisis.

This is why the 100 billion euros in bailout money for Spain is not going to be enough to cover the bad mortgage-backed securities. The market knows this, which is why the credit crisis has reignited.

To add to the problem, Spain?s regions?equivalent to states here in the U.S.?are asking for 15 billion euros in bailout money from the Bank of Spain, because they have run out of funds.

We complain here in the U.S. about the ?fiscal cliff? at the end of the year, which will amount to three to four percent of GDP; but what about Spain, with almost 25% unemployment, a recession with contracting GDP, and austerity measures that will subtract another 10% from its economy? No wonder Spain?s credit crisis is front-and-center.

When investors saw this earlier this week, they sold Spanish bonds, which sent Spanish interest rates to record highs!

Investors understand that there is no way Spain can make good on its debts because tax revenue will continue to fall with the ongoing recession and austerity measures. Welcome to the next round of the credit crisis.

Certainly Europe, especially Germany, must make demands on Spain for the money they lend the country, but austerity measures to the degree Germany is asking are not livable for the people of Spain. The economy needs some kind of boost. Spain looks like it is guaranteed a depression right now; forget recession! (See: ?Economic Situation in Spain Reaches Catastrophic Level.?)

The European credit crisis once again takes center stage. The European leaders must do something and soon or a Spanish bank will go bankrupt. My guess is more money printing is on the way. If they don?t print money and a Spanish bank goes bankrupt, dear reader, hold on tight, because all hell is going to break loose?and that?s why they will print!

Where the Market Stands; Where it?s Headed:

Yesterday marked the third day in a row the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 100 points. Not a fun time to be an investor. But I will let you in on a little secret?it?s going to get much worse!

We are near the end of a bear market rally in stocks that started in March of 2009.

What He Said:

?Recipe for Catastrophe: To me, the accelerated rate at which American consumers are spending, coupled with the drastic decline in the amount of their savings is a recipe for a financial catastrophe.? Michael Lombardi in Profit Confidential, September 7, 2005. Michael started talking about and predicting the financial catastrophe we began experiencing in 2008 long before anyone else.

$3 Pregnancy Test Dispenser At Minnesota Bar Pub 500 Aims To ...

A Minnesota bar wants women to remember to think before they drink. The bar has installed a dispenser with $3 pregnancy tests in the public women's bathrooms in an attempt to prevent fetal alcohol syndrome.

Tom Fredrik, owner of Pub 500 in Mankato, Minn., agreed to make the $3 pregnancy tests available at his bar.

"Strange, yes," Fredrik told Kare11. "But it took about 30 seconds to say yes."

The idea for the dispenser came from Jody Allen Crowe, an expert in fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and executive director of Healthy Brains for Children, an organization dedicated to preventing prenatal exposure to alcohol.

The pregnancy tests can be purchased with the simple swipe of a debit card. On the face of the dispenser is a large sign that reads: "Think Before You Drink."

"If it gives you an informed decision at that point in time to stop drinking, your baby is going to be better for it," Crowe told Kare11.

The Think Before You Drink Initiative was launched on July 19, according to the Healthy Brains for Children website.

Pub 500 is the first establishment to feature the $3 pregnancy test dispenser, and some bar patrons are intrigued by the installment.

"It's either a cocktail or a kiddie cocktail from that point on," Pub 500 patron Trish Bordonaro told WQOW.

The addition of the dispenser comes on the heels of a recent report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention which revealed that one in 13 pregnant women drink. Of those women, one in five reported binge drinking while pregnant, according to CBS News. "Binge drinking" equates to consuming four of more drinks in about two hours.

Women between the ages of 35 and 44 were most likely to report alcohol use during pregnancy, the CDC reported.

Although a series of recent studies reported on by Forbes suggest that light drinking during pregnancy may not be harmful, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder can lead to a variety of problems in children.

The U.S. National Library of Medicine states that drinking during any stage of pregnancy can cause both physical and behavioral problems with learning and remembering; understanding and following directions; controlling emotions; communicating and socializing; and daily life skills, such as feeding and bathing.

"These results indicate that binge drinking during pregnancy continues to be a concern," wrote the CDC researchers, led by Claire M. Marchetta. "Pregnant and nonpregnant women of childbearing age who misuse alcohol might benefit from public health interventions."

M-Audio Oxygen 49

The third-generation M-Audio Oxygen 49 ($189.95 list) is a solid 49-key MIDI keyboard controller that works with PCs and Macs. It's actually part of a four-product lineup, which consists of the Oxygen 25, the Oxygen 49, the Oxygen 61, and the Oxygen 88, with each number reflecting the corresponding key bed size. It turns out that regardless of which one you choose, the M-Audio Oxygen is an easy Editors' Choice. It offers excellent value as a day-to-day controller for Apple GarageBand ($14.99, 4.5 stars), as well as pro-level digital audio workstations, virtual synthesizer plug-ins, and music instruction software.

Design and Controls
The Oxygen 49 measures 29 by 9.4 by 3.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 6.4 pounds. The keyboard is made entirely of plastic, with a smooth, expensive-looking gray finish, and full size ivory-like keys. It looks bluish in photos, but in person it appears gray, and it feels solid and well made.

One of the reasons why the M-Audio Oxygen line has been successful for so long is its vast array of MIDI control features, and here the Oxygen 49 doesn't disappoint. Starting at the top left, there are two plastic pitch bend and modulation wheels, each one with a sizable finger indent. Four rubber keys to the right handle Track Select and transposition. To the right of those keys, a 3-digit red LED display shows the currently selected parameter?usually with a range of 0 to 127, although it also shows octave and preset info. This is one place that even a slightly larger LED display would be helpful, though I suppose M-Audio has to save something for its more expensive Axiom line (which also features higher quality, semi-weighted keys and eight drum sample pads, among other upgrades).

The Oxygen 49's back panel, meanwhile, features a standard-size USB port, a sustain pedal jack, and a power switch, with a Kensington-style lock opening on the right side for security purposes in student and educational settings. The Oxygen 49 comes with a six-foot USB cable, but no AC adapter. In fact, there's no DC power jack, either. That's not a problem with today's PCs, but it hampers compatibility with an iPhone or iPad, since third-party MIDI adapters like the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI ($69.99, 3.5 stars) assume AC power for the keyboard. I wouldn't have minded if the AC adapter was optional, but to remove the jack with it seems a bit excessive.

M-Audio Oxygen 49

Programming, Performance, and Conclusions
A long row of rectangular keys just above the keyboard let you program controller information. These work in conjunction with the MIDI keyboard itself, which when placed in Edit mode handles various functions according to the labels behind the keys (such as for bank switching, velocity curves, and drawbar programming). More prominently, there are nine assignable sliders in the center of the keyboard, plus eight assignable knobs on the right side. Dedicated transport keys sit on the right beneath the knobs. All of the controls feel good to the touch and move with precision.

I tested the M-Audio Oxygen 49 with a custom-built Core i7 PC running Avid Pro Tools 10 ($699.99, 4.5 stars), Steinberg Cubase 6.5 ($499.95, 4 stars), and Cakewalk SONAR X1 ($499.99, 3 stars), as well as with a 15-inch MacBook Pro running Apple Logic Pro 9 ($199.99, 4.5 stars). The Oxygen 49 worked flawlessly in all cases. Key feel is on the light side, but felt precise enough that I wasn't constantly reminded I was playing a budget-priced controller, and the vast array of knobs and sliders made controlling on-screen parameters a breeze.

If you're looking for something that feels more like an actual piano, you'll want semi-weighted or fully weighted, piano-style keys with solid front ends. The new Oxygen 88 looks like a good alternative, although I haven't tested it yet; there are of course many other 88-key controllers out there. On the smaller side, the Alesis Q25 ($179.95, 3.5 stars) is a slightly lower-cost alternative that omits most of the controls. The Q25 features a two-inch shallower depth that makes it easier to place on a small desk, although it's a bit wider, as the pitch bend and modulation wheels are on the left of the key bed. If you're planning on using your controller with an iPad, the Samson Carbon 49 ($89, 3.5 stars) offers a built-in slot to sit the tablet neatly in front of you and at an angle, although it lacks the Oxygen 49's copious array of assignable sliders, knobs, and transport controls and doesn't feel quite as robust.

Sailing prepares for Olympic kick-off | News | Pbo

Olympic organisers, Team GB sailors and the spectators expected to flock to Weymouth are all preparing for the start of the Games.

12,000 people are expected to watch Friday's opening ceremony on the big screens at the Live Site on Weymouth Beach where the sailing action will also be televised.

The 12 will be introduced onto the stage in Weymouth between 7.50 and 8.10pm, before the opening ceremony begins at the Olympic Stadium.

Team GB sailing team leader Stephen Park said: 'With most of the sailors unable to travel to London for the main opening ceremony due to training and racing schedules, we really wanted to the celebrate the start of the Games with our supporters in Weymouth and Portland, which has been home to our team for a number of years now.

'We can already feel the excitement building here in Weymouth and Portland, and I know we can rely on some fantastic local support for Team GB's sailors, who will be doing all they can to put in performances that they and we will all be proud of.'

It is free to attend the Live Site, but capacity numbers are limited.

Meanwhile, the finishing touches are being applied to the equipment that will be used to organise the racing.

Zanzibar charges three for ferry tragedy, with over 104 dead

Zanzibari authorities on Wednesday charged three people with manslaughter for the sinking of a ferry last week in which at least 104 people drowned, including the ship's owner and captain.

At least 146 of the 290 passengers on the MV Skagit were rescued when it sank on Wednesday in choppy waters as it crossed from mainland Tanzania to the island of Zanzibar.

Police said last week that there is no hope of the missing passengers being found alive, raising the prospect that as many as 144 passengers may have died.

Owner Said Abdulrahman Juma, 46, captain Mussa Makame Mussa, 49, and company manager Omar Hassan Mkoje, 50, were charged at Zanzibar's High Court with manslaughter.

They were not required to enter any plea, were released on bail, and are due to appear in court again on August 7.

"The death toll so far is 104... out of 290 who were on board," Zanzibari state minister Mohammed Aboud Mohammed said Wednesday, increasing an earlier toll of 78 bodies found. The bodies include those of two Dutch tourists.

Hamad Masoud Hamad, minister for marine transportation, resigned from his position on Monday.

In September more than 200 people perished when the MV Spice Islander, which the authorities admitted was overloaded, sank while sailing between two of the main islands in the Zanzibar archipelago. Rescue workers saved 619 passengers.

Batman mask found at suspect's apartment

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? University of Colorado officials were looking Sunday into whether James Holmes used his position in a graduate program to collect hazardous materials, but school officials weren't saying whether they knew the suspect in a movie theater massacre was anything more than a hard-working student.

Law enforcement officials also revealed that Holmes, 24, has not been cooperating with them and that it could take months to learn what prompted the attack early Friday on a packed theater of moviegoers watching the premiere of the latest Batman movie. The assault killed 12 and left 58 wounded.

Investigators found a Batman mask inside Holmes' apartment after they finished clearing the home of booby traps and ammunition, a law enforcement official close to the investigation said Sunday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama flew to Colorado for a few hours to comfort residents in a state that's critical to the November election. He began his visit with the family members of the victims at the University of Colorado Hospital, which treated 23 of the people injured; 10 remain there, seven hurt critically. The hospital is a short drive from the site of the shooting.

After meeting with the families, he said that he was there "not as president but as a father and a husband."

He said that "we can all understand what it would be to have someone taken from us in this fashion."

Holmes was being held in solitary confinement at a Denver-area county detention facility, Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, and is "lawyered up."

"He's not talking to us," the chief said. He is scheduled for an initial hearing Monday at 9:30 a.m. MDT, and has been assigned a public defender.

Police have said that Holmes began buying guns at Denver-area stores nearly two months before Friday's shooting and that he received at least 50 packages in four months at his home and at school. Also on Sunday, a gun range owner east of Denver said he recently rejected a membership application from Holmes in part because of a bizarre voice mail greeting on Holmes' phone.

While the University of Colorado disclosed that it was cooperating with police in the case, that disclosure was one of the few the university has made three days after the massacre. It remained unclear whether Holmes' professors and other students at his 35-student Ph.D. program noticed anything unusual about his behavior.

His reasons for quitting the program in June, just a year into the five- to seven-year program, also remained a mystery.

Holmes recently took an intense, three-part oral exam that marks the end of the first year. Those who do well continue with their studies and shift to full-time research, while those who don't do well meet with advisers and discuss their options, including retaking the exam. University officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns.

The university said Holmes gave no reason for his withdrawal, a decision he made in June.

Holmes was not allowed access from the institution after his withdrawal, which was "standard operating procedure" because he was no longer affiliated with the school, Montgomery said. Holmes had no contact with university police, she said.

The university declined to release any details of his academic record, citing privacy concerns, and at least two dozen professors and other staff declined to speak with The Associated Press. Some said they were instructed not to talk publicly about Holmes in a blanket email sent to university employees.

Jacque Montgomery, a spokeswoman for the University of Colorado medical school, said that police have told the school to not talk about Holmes. The university also took down the website for its graduate neuroscience program on Saturday.

Dan Keeney, president of DPK Public Relations in Dallas, said asking for silence from university employees because of a police investigation was appropriate, but taking down the website was "indefensible" for a publicly funded university unless the school believed it contained inaccurate information relating to the program.

"It's an indefensible action," he said. "It's disappointing to hear that they would take that action because it suggests that it's not in the public's interest to have access to that information and I think it is in the public's interest."

Amid the continuing investigation of Holmes and his background, Sunday was a day for healing and remembrance in Aurora, with President Barack Obama arriving to visit with families of the victims and a vigil that began in the early evening.

Obama said he told the families of the victims of Friday's massacre that "all of America and much of the world is thinking about them." He met with them at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, which treated 23 of the people injured in the mass shooting; 10 remain there, seven hurt critically.

Congregations across Colorado prayed for the shooting victims and their relatives. Churches sent out social-media appeals for neighbors who wanted to join in remembrance. Elderly churchgoers at an aging Presbyterian church within walking distance near Holmes' apartment joined in prayer, though none had ever met him.

Hundreds gathered for prayers and healing at the vigil Sunday night, where a banner said, "Angels Walk With Those Who Grieve."

"You're not alone, and you will get through it," said the Rev. Kenneth Berve, pastor at Grant Avenue United Methodist Church and a witness to Friday's horrors. "We can't let fear and anger take control of us."

Aurora resident Heather Lebedoff, 24, placed a rose on each cross that had been erected in memory of those killed. She said she didn't know anyone in the theater, but she felt connected to her neighbors and all the pain they have gone through.

"This is the city I live in, and I know there are a lot of people affected by this. Stuff like this really shows what love and community is all about."

Meanwhile, the owner of a gun range told the AP that Holmes applied to join the club last month but never became a member because of his behavior and a "bizarre" message on his voice mail.

He emailed an application to join the Lead Valley Range in Byers on June 25 in which he said he was not a user of illegal drugs or a convicted felon, said owner Glenn Rotkovich. When Rotkovich called to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week, he said he heard a message on Holmes' voice mail that was "bizarre ? guttural, freakish at best."

He left two other messages but eventually told his staff to watch out for Holmes at the July 1 orientation and not to accept him into the club, Rotkovich said.

Ritchie Duong, a friend who has known Holmes for more than a decade, told the Los Angeles Times that in high school he liked to play cards and video games. They both attended undergraduate school at the University of California, Riverside, where they saw each other once a week to watch the TV show "Lost."

Duong last saw Holmes in December when they met for dinner in Los Angeles and saw a movie together. His friend seemed fine, he told the newspaper. Academics came easily to Holmes both at high school and at the UC Riverside, Duong said.

"I had one college class with him, and he didn't even have to take notes or anything. He would just show up to class, sit there, and around test time he would always get an 'A,'" said Duong, 24.

The pastor for the family of the suspect also recalled a shy boy who was driven to succeed academically.

"He wasn't an extrovert at all. If there was any conversation, it would be because I initiated it, not because he did," said Jerald Borgie, senior pastor of Penasquitos Lutheran Church. Borgie said he never saw the suspect mingle with others his age at church.

Holmes told the pastor he wanted to attend a University of California school and pursue graduate studies. Borgie, who last spoke with Holmes about six years ago, doesn't remember the suspect being more specific about his goals.

"He had some goals. He wanted to succeed, he wanted to go out, and he wanted to be the best," Borgie said. "He took pride in his academic abilities. A good student. He didn't brag about it."

The family has belonged to the church for about 10 years, Borgie said. The suspect's mother, Arlene, attends services every week and volunteers her time.

During the attack early Friday, Holmes set off gas canisters and used the military-style semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers, Oates said. Holmes had bought the weapons at local gun stores in the past two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

The gunman's semiautomatic assault rifle jammed during the attack at the Aurora movie theater, forcing him to switch to another gun with less firepower, a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press. That malfunction and weapons switch during the shooting rampage might have saved some lives.

Oates said a 100-round ammunition drum was found in the theater but said he did not know whether it jammed or emptied.

Police have finished collecting evidence from the apartment where the Colorado shooting suspect lived, but residents are still not allowed back into the building because of chemical hazards. Aurora police said Sunday residents can retrieve personal items, but the building remains closed.

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Across the street from the movie theater, a man who placed 15 crosses near Columbine High School after a 1999 massacre there has returned to Colorado with 12 crosses for the victims of Friday's shooting.

Greg Zanis, of Aurora, Ill., put up the 3 1/2-foot-tall crosses Sunday on a hill across the street from the Century 16 theater.
