Quarantine

Quarantine

Numerous people have been apparently diagnosed with harbouring the deadly plague seeds of Denva. All of them have been removed from their homes and placed in a new facility in order to be "quarantined".

Welcome to "Quarantine"

Thankyou for viewing my roleplay, and I hope you will consider taking part.
Here feel free to make reservations, ask questions and discuss the roleplay.

Please note, this is a literate, and advanced rp, so I will be rather strict on character profiles. My own characters stand as examples of what I am expecting. Since this is literate (again, pointing this out (: ) roleplay, if you are not willing/prepared to write around 600 words for each of your posts, please don't join.
About the reservations, they last 24hours and people can reserve the same character and compete if needed.

Hiya! This looks really cool! And man, good, interesting literate roleplays are so hard to come by on this site sometimes. So I would like to reserve male in Dorm 1, if you'll let me?

Oh! But I have a question too.

1. Subjects are completely banned from Floors 3 and 4.

Did you mean Floors 1 and 2? Sorry if it's just a typo or something! I'm just making sure since I'm going by the floors' descriptions.

Michael Clarke Duncan Dies: Tom Hanks, Celebs React

Michael Clarke Duncan died Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. He was 54. According to his rep, Duncan "suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered." The imposing 6-foot-5 actor first burst onto the scene in 1999, when he starred opposite Tom Hanks in Frank Darabont's The Green Mile. Duncan played John Coffee, a 1930s death-row prisoner with magical healing powers, and was nominated for an Academy Award for the remarkable performance.

Why Telef?nica Is Acing It With A New $378M LatAm Fund And A Growing Incubator Network

200px-Latin_America_(orthographic_projection)There are a few significant trends going on in this particular era. There is an explosion of technology adoption and innovation happening in developing regions like Latin America, and a few of us are aware that big lumbering corporates are struggling to deal with the pace of change - indeed, it seems like the old R&D departments of yore are a ridiculous concept when enormous disruption could come from Zuckerburg's Harvard dorm. But there are few companies realising how to latch onto that innovation. One of them appears to be global telecoms giant Telef?nica. Today it launches Am?rigo, a $378 million (?300 million) fund that is focused on Latin America. Combined with its growing network of Wayra incubators, and it's clever focus on Latin America, this appears to be one of the more interesting moves made by such a big company. And one which its competitors may not even be aware of.

Eyes on the new Hisense Pulse Google TV set-top box

Android Central

Officially unveiled prior to the annual IFA 2012 show in Berlin, Hisense were on hand at the show in to demonstrate their first Google TV box for the first time. The Pulse as it goes by name, is the latest product of a Google TV partnership, and packs a potentially killer feature. Its price. Like the low priced competitor, Vizio Co-Star, the Pulse is priced to move at just $99. But, even at such a low price point, it still needs to deliver the goods. Whilst on the ground in Berlin, we tracked down the Pulse and took a first look at this latest entrant into the Google TV arena.

In terms of hardware, the Pulse is a rather un-assuming black box to look at. It's relatively small though, and should fade into a front room set up with very little effort. It won't stand out, but it won't look out of place either. It's all glossy plastic, which doesn't give off the impression of a high quality product, but at $99 we wouldn't really expect that much more. The expected ports are all present, a solitary USB port on one side of the box, with the HDMI, ethernet and power sockets all on the rear. Also to be found on the rear is a connector for an IR blaster.

The Remote too doesn't exactly strike the same impression as that of a high end TV, but importantly it offers full functionality. On one side is a full QWERTY keyboard packed with rubber keys. Typing isn't too difficult, the keys feel just like a regular old TV remote. There seems to be ample space between keys so as to avoid hitting the wrong ones.

Flipping round to the main side of the remote, we're treated to a bevy of controls and a touch sensitive trackpad. The trackpad is quite small though, and we had some definite troubles using it to zoom in whilst using Google Chrome. This could have been -- and likely was -- an issue with Chrome though, as it seemed relatively responsive when being used to direct the on screen cursor.

The remainder of the keys are pretty much standard Google TV fare, although the Pulse Remote does have dedicated buttons for YouTube and for Netflix.

A quick look at the performance of the device highlights similar issues reported from early purchasers of the Vizio Co-Star. It isn't massively smooth in some areas, and when navigating around the menus there was some noticeable lag. In particular, Google Chrome seemed pretty slow to respond. However,  we shouldn't forget that this is a trade show with pre-release hardware and software the norm.

All in all though the Pulse isn't a bad little box. It will be launching in the U.S. sometime during the fall, but Hisense did confirm to us that they have every intention of bringing the Pulse to Europe in 2013. As Google TV is still in its infancy on European shores, a set-top box in this price category could be what's needed to give it a little kick start.

Be sure to check out our photo gallery of the Hisense Pulse after the break.

Stress During Pregnancy Linked with Preterm Births

Babies born to women who experienced a lot of stress during pregnancy may have worse health than those born to less-stressed women, according to a new study from the Netherlands.

Results show that women reporting high levels of stress ? as measured on a scale of depression and anxiety symptoms ? were more likely than other pregnant women to deliver low-birth-weight babies.

Additionally, about 7 percent to 8 percent of the depressed or anxious women had babies who were born pre-term, compared with 5 percent to 6 percent of women without these symptoms, the study showed. While the difference may seem small, the difference is clinically relevant given the life-long effects that pre-term birth can bring, the researchers said.

"Babies from pregnant women reporting both high levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms are at highest risk," said study researcher Eva Loomans, a psychologist at Tilburg University.

Support for these women could help prevent long-term health consequences for their children, Loomans said.

It is normal to experience some form of stress during pregnancy, Loomans said, but studies show that about 25 percent of women experience "psychosocial" stress, which interferes with their daily life and functioning. It is this type of stress that contributes to worse outcomes for infants, she said.

In the study, Loomans and her colleagues looked at data gathered from 7,700 women who had taken part in the Amsterdam Born Children and Their Development study. When they were about 16 weeks pregnant, the women filled out a questionnaire about their mental health, and the researchers later followed up with questions about their babies.

Previous studies looking at the link between stress during pregnancy and babies' health had been inconclusive, Loomans said.

In the new findings, the link held even when the researchers took into account factors that could affect a baby's birth weight or likelihood of being born pre-term, such as a mother's age, ethnicity and smoking.

The researchers grouped the women in the study based on the causes of their stress; for example, some reported job strain, while others reported worries about their ability to parent. "However, it did not seem to matter whether they were unemployed or reported moderate job strain," Loomans said. In any case, babies born to women with symptoms of both anxiety and depressionwere most likely to be born small or early.

If further research replicates and strengthens the findings, she said, routinely screening pregnant women for stress could bring better health for babies. "The emphasis should lie on screening for anxiety and depressive symptoms."

The study was published online July 31 in the?European Journal of Public Health.

Pass it on: Pregnant women under the most stress seem most likely to deliver low-birth-weight babies, according to a Dutch study.

How The Federal Case Against Joe Arpaio Unraveled

Arizona Republic:

At 5 p.m. Friday, before a long holiday weekend, a brief note went out from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix, saying without explanation that the office would not file federal or state criminal charges against "current and former members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office."
