Amazon phone more desired than Facebook one

By Suzanne Choney

More consumers would definitely bite on a phone made by Amazon versus one from Facebook, according to a new survey.

AllThingsD reports that though there's no enormous pent-up demand for either, a phone designed and sold by the retail giant has a far larger potential audience than one coming from social network giant. Based on a survey of 875 consumers done by Baird Equity Research, "42 percent said they're either 'interested' or 'very interested' in an Amazon smartphone, while 29 percent volunteered that they were either 'not interested' or 'probably not interested.' About 30 percent said they weren?t sure," writes John Paczkowski.

"The rumored Facebook phone fared quite a bit worse. Only 12 percent of respondents said that they would be 'interested' or 'very interested' in a smartphone from the social networking company. The majority of them ? 73 percent ? said that they would likely either be 'not interested' or 'probably not interested.'"

A Facebook-made phone has been talked about by everyone but Facebook for more than a year. At last report, Facebook was partnering with HTC to build a phone code-named "Buffy."

Analysts say Amazon is planning to get in the phone game by building one that would cost in the $150 to $170 range. As msnbc.com's Wilson Rothman noted last fall, Amazon would make its money by selling services and content, as it does with the Kindle line of tablets and e-readers.

Facebook, in documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission related to its recent IPO, noted that mobile users of the site continue to grow, but the company does "not currently directly generate any meaningful revenue from the use of Facebook mobile products, and our ability to do so successfully is unproven." Along those lines, Facebook said it plans to start running mobile ads next month.
