SAN JOSE -- Members of the San Jose Fire Department continues to keep vigil over a hospitalized firefighter who suffered a heart attack Thursday while fighting a downtown church fire, while the parish staff scramble to keep services going for worshippers.
Frank Ryan, a 15-year veteran of the department, remains in critical but stable condition at Regional Medical Center of San Jose after undergoing emergency surgery. Fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said she and her colleagues have coordinated to keep a constant presence at the hospital.
"A lot of us are taking turns at the hospital," Gutierrez said, adding that Ryan's family has been at his side.
According to the fire department, Ryan collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest while fighting a fast-moving three-alarm fire at St. Patrick's Cathedral on East Santa Clara and Eighth streets around noon Thursday. The blaze filled the Catholic church with thick black smoke and flushed parishioners and students in the adjacent parochial school outside, but none were injured.
Meanwhile, the Diocese of San Jose has made arrangements for St. Patrick's worshippers to attend services at a series of alternate sites. Diocese spokeswoman Bernie Luongo Hoye said it's not known how long the cathedral will be closed.
Services will be held as follows:
