Jenson Button wins crash-marred Belgian GP

SPA, Belgium (AP) ? Jenson Button coasted to his second victory of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, with Formula One championship leader Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton forced out after a spectacular crash at the start.

It was Button's first victory at Spa and No. 14 for the British driver's career. He led from start to finish, oblivious to the mayhem behind him.

"This is such a special circuit, so to get a victory here from light to flag is very special," Button said. "It hasn't been an easy year for me. We're going to enjoy this for a little while longer before we head to Monza and hopefully do the same."

Button triumphantly zigzagged across the track as he approached the finish line and then clapped his hands together in celebration. He then stood on his McLaren and leaned his head back as he clenched both fists.

"The car felt very good to drive and I could control the degradation of the tires. It's always easier to do that when you're leading," said Button, who climbed to sixth place overall. "It's a massive long shot to win the title, but today proves that you can claw back 25 points very quickly. There's still 63 points to make up, but anything's possible."

Defending champion Sebastian Vettel benefited from the chaos to finish second and trim Alonso's lead to 24 points ? putting the two-time champion right back in contention.

"I was reasonably confident because I know anything can happen here and you can overtake," Vettel said.

Kimi Raikkonen was third, continuing the consistent form he's shown all season long with his third straight podium and sixth overall.

"My car was not the nicest to drive the whole race," Raikkonen said. "I was fighting to get the best out of it and we managed to get some key points, so that was the main thing."

The early wreck, which was triggered by Lotus driver Romain Grosjean, also took out Mexican driver Sergio Perez, and Grosjean himself.

Grosjean went for a small gap and clipped Hamilton's McLaren. That sent both cars spinning and led to Grosjean's Lotus flying over Alonso's Ferrari, which then took out Perez's Sauber. All four drivers escaped unhurt.

"I'm fine and 100 (percent) already thinking (about) Monza!" Alonso said on his Twitter page.

A visibly frustrated Hamilton briefly confronted Grosjean after the incident and tapped the side of his own helmet with his finger after getting out of his car.

Grosjean's actions may be investigated, since he took the dangerous option of changing direction moments after the start.

Following a miserable qualifying performance on Saturday, Vettel was relieved to get on the podium after starting from 10th on the grid.

"It was a crazy race, after the first corner where a few cars went off," the German driver said. "The car was quite good in the race and we were able to pick up some pace. It was a fantastic race, great to come second."

Germany's Nico Hulkenberg was fourth for Force India, ahead of Ferrari's Felipe Massa in fifth and Red Bull's Mark Webber, who had started from 12th because of a gearbox penalty.

Alonso, who had picked up points in every race this season, was lucky to escape serious injury as Grosjean's Lotus went over his car and narrowly missed the Spaniard's head.

Button was not affected by the crash and maintained his lead as the safety car went on the track and piles of smashed car parts were cleared away.

A veteran of 222 races, Button shrugged off the incident. He was seven seconds clear of Nico Hulkenberg after 12 laps.

Michael Schumacher, chasing his second podium position of the season in his 300th career GP, drove aggressively on the Spa circuit where he made his F1 debut 21 years ago. The 43-year-old stormed into second after 15 laps, with Vettel climbing to third as they pushed their soft tires to the limit.

Schumacher proved to be a bit too aggressive, however.

He almost careered into Vettel at the Bus Stop chicane as he cut across him going into the pits for a tire change. Schumacher faced a stewards' inquiry for the risky move.

Vettel said it was a moment of confusion and Schumacher should not be punished.

Button came in on lap 22 for his only stop, and still had a comfortable lead of 13 seconds on Vettel coming out.

McLaren sounded supremely confident that the one-stop strategy would carry Button all the way, saying "Plan A is good" over the race radio and that he was "pulling away" from Raikkonen.

Schumacher pitted for a second tire change with eight laps remaining.

Apple asks court to ban Samsung's Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III from US

On Friday, Apple expanded a patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung, including the Galaxy Note, the Galaxy S III, and the Galaxy note 10.1 tablet to a list of other devices it sought an injunction against on Monday. Apple claims in the lawsuit that 21 of Samsung's devices infringed against Apple's patents and should be banned from sale in the US.

Last week, Apple won an important court victory against Samsung when a jury found that Samsung had caused just over $1 billion in damages to Apple for patent infringement. Samsung will have to pay Apple that fee, and the decision may also inform this second lawsuit, which isn't expected to go to trial until next year.

As Ars wrote earlier this week, Apple originally sought to ban only 8 of Samsung's devices?including the Galaxy S2 Skyrocket or the Droid Charge?many of which were older models that had been made obsolete by newer models already, or weren't even available any longer in the US. But the healthy sales enjoyed by the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III change the stakes of the coming court battle. If Apple is granted injunctions against these two additional products, Samsung could be forced to lose a great chunk of its US sales.

The amended Galaxy complaint states that infringing Samsung products include, "new smartphones, media players, and tablets that Samsung has released beginning in August 2011 and continuing through August 2012.? The infringing products as listed in the complaint are: the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S III?Verizon, Galaxy Note, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II-T-Mobile, Galaxy S II-AT&T, Galaxy Nexus, Illusion, Captivate Glide, Exhibit II 4G, Stratosphere, Transform Ultra, Admire, Conquer 4G, and Dart smartphones, the Galaxy Player 4.0 and Galaxy Player 5.0 media players, and the Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and Galaxy Tab 8.9.

GOP tries to portray Biden as governing liability

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Republicans have a new rhetorical punching bag: Vice President Joe Biden.

With relentless attacks aimed at portraying President Barack Obama's running mate as a governing liability, Republicans hope to raise the stature of GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, who will debate Biden next month, and score points in closely contested states such as Ohio, Florida and New Hampshire.

"Paul's a close friend, a great family man, and he's got a reformer's heart," Ohio Sen. Rob Portman said at last week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. "Contrast this to Joe Biden. Vice President Biden has told people out of work to 'just hang in there' ? so much for 'hope and change.'"

As Democrats prepare for their convention in Charlotte, N.C., the GOP is casting the 69-year-old former Delaware senator as a gaffe-prone crazy uncle who's hung around the political scene too long. The strategy tries to undermine the Obama campaign's chief surrogate and liaison to white, working-class voters and seniors, influential groups courted aggressively by both parties. At the same time, Republicans hopes that sullying Biden's image will help confirm Ryan, the 42-year-old Wisconsin congressman, as a deep thinker destined to take on many of the nation's most pressing challenges.

In an opinion piece published this past week by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson noted that Biden had said the economy felt like "a depression" and he accused the vice president of straying from "the Obama campaign talking points."

At the GOP convention, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who joined Obama, Biden and House Speaker John Boehner for a round of golf last year, recalled Biden telling him he was a "good golfer. And I played golf with Joe Biden, and I can tell you that is not true, as well as all of other things that he says."

Even unscripted moments have included knocks at Biden.

Actor Clint Eastwood's convention monologue, beside an empty chair, included a swipe at Biden.

"You're crazy, you're absolutely crazy. You're getting as bad as Biden," Eastwood cracked in his made-up conversation with Obama. "Of course we all know Biden is the intellect of the Democratic Party. Kind of a grin with a body behind it."

Biden himself has given as good as he gets.

He often is the loudest voice in the campaign's criticism against the Republican presidential nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. Biden led the charge against Romney in a series of speeches in battleground states last spring. He routinely bashes Romney and Ryan's assertions of promoting a "bold" plan on taxes and the Medicare.

"There is nothing gutsy about giving another trillion dollars in tax cuts to millionaires. There is nothing bold about turning Medicare into a voucher system," Biden said in Lordstown, Ohio, on Friday.

Another favorite topic of Biden's has been the administration's rescue of General Motors and Chrysler. Turning to Lordstown's sprawling GM plant, which has rebounded with the production of the compact Chevy Cruze, Biden took Ryan to task for blaming Obama for the closing of his hometown Janesville, Wis., GM plant, and he highlighted Romney's opposition to a taxpayer rescue of the U.S. car companies. The Janesville plant closed in 2008, before Obama was sworn into office.

"What they didn't acknowledge is Gov. Romney's position was 'Let Detroit go bankrupt,'" Biden said, referring to the headline on a Romney opinion piece in The New York Times in November 2008.

Democrats say the extra attention serves notice of Biden's abilities as a campaigner, along with his penchant for forming bonds with blue-collar workers through stories about growing up in hardscrabble Scranton, Pa.

He can move an audience with stories about watching his proud yet unemployed father forced to move to Delaware to find work or the death of his first wife and daughter in a car accident shortly after he was elected to the Senate in 1972. Such personal stories make a direct connection with union workers in Ohio or grandmothers in Florida.

"It's an attempt to undermine what they believe is a potent political weapon in the Obama campaign's arsenal," said Democratic strategist Mike Feldman, a former aide to Vice President Al Gore. "If they were ignoring him that would tell you that they're not that concerned."

Of course, Biden can be prone to commit an unforced error from the podium, handing Republicans an opening.

Most recently, Biden told a Virginia crowd that included hundreds of African-Americans that Romney's plans for Wall Street would put them "back in chains."

In May, Biden said on a Sunday talk show that he was "absolutely comfortable" with same-sex married couples having the same rights as heterosexual married couples. That essentially forced Obama to move forward with his support of same-sex marriage. Biden later apologized to the president for going off-script.

Republican strategist Steve Schmidt, who managed GOP nominee John McCain's 2008 presidential campaign, said Biden was a "formidable politician" and an "effective campaigner" who could garner support among voters prized by both campaigns, including blue-collar workers and Catholics in states such as Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Schmidt warned that the hits on Biden actually could have an unintended consequence heading into to the vice presidential debate set for Oct. 11 in Danville, Ky.

"When you ridicule someone, you're lowering expectations to a point that makes it a lot harder for Paul Ryan to score points," Schmidt said. "There's a downside in that."

Ex-Marine tweeted about killing coworkers in '09

OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (AP) ? Unhappy with his life as a Marine stationed in California, Terence Tyler posed a question three years ago on Twitter: "is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?"

Struggling with depression, he left the Marines and recently started working at a supermarket in New Jersey.

On Friday morning, Tyler shot two co-workers and himself, police said. The 23-year-old, clad in desert camouflage gear, opened fire at a Pathmark store in Old Bridge Township, authorities said.

Authorities are investigating his motive, but family members said Tyler was discharged from the Marines two years ago after suffering from depression and had never gotten over his mother's death about five years ago.

Authorities said Tyler left his job as an overnight clerk at the Pathmark about 3:30 a.m. He drove off and returned to the store shortly afterward with a handgun and an assault rifle, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan said. About a dozen workers were in the closed store, putting new prices into a computer.

Tyler fired more than 16 rounds from his rifle ? shooting at an employee standing outside and blowing out windows, authorities said. He shot at five other workers in an aisle, killing Christina LoBrutto, 18, and Bryan Breen, 24, the prosecutor said.

Tyler, who began working at the supermarket less than two weeks ago, then drew his handgun and killed himself, Kaplan said.

Several ammunition magazines were recovered along with the rifle and a .45-caliber handgun, he said.

"I do not believe that they were specifically targeted," Kaplan said of the two victims. "I believe everybody in the store was a target."

John Niccollai, president of a foodworkers union, said many of the employees escaped harm when an assistant manager directed them toward a back door.

Breen and LoBrutto were both cashiers. They normally worked day shifts, but pulled overnight shifts every few weeks to put in new price changes, Niccollai said. Tyler began work for Pathmark Aug. 20 as a night clerk, stocking shelves.

Pathmark worker Miranda Miranda said she steered clear of Tyler.

"The way he looked at me, he gave me an uneasy vibe," she said.

Miranda usually worked the overnight shift Thursday but said LoBrutto agreed to work the shift for her a few weeks ago. "That could've been me," Miranda said.

Tyler was discharged from the Marines in 2010, nearly two years in the service at Twentynine Palms, Calif., according to the Marines. The infantryman from New York City never served overseas, said Marine spokeswoman Capt. Kendra Motz. She wouldn't comment on the circumstances of his discharge.

Tyler's Twitter account, which has a photograph identified by family members as Tyler, interspersed posts about hating Marine life, expressions of violence, and his take on football, movies, women and other interests.

"Sigh, this weeks gonna b gaaaaaay," he wrote in June 2009, using the handle (at)Tylerbkstyle. "smh is it normal to want to kill ALL of ur coworkers?Maybe but I'm actually in a position where I can, smh"

Tyler again Tweeted months later about killing.

"I'm starting to see why plp go on killin sprees," he wrote. And these (obscenity) are reeeeeeally pushin my kill everyone I see button."

At the top of Tyler's Facebook page was the motto: "Be optimistic. All the people you hate are going to eventually die."

Christopher Dyson, Tyler's uncle, said Tyler left the Marines after suffering from depression. A cousin said Tyler had been hospitalized.

Tyler, who also lived in San Diego, left California in June for New Jersey, where he lived with his sister and uncle.

"He was a quiet cat, you know?" said Dyson, who works at the store and helped Tyler get a job there.

His cousin, Shanteya Dyson, said Tyler had not been the same since his mother died of cancer.

"That was his best friend. He was always a quiet guy. But he got more quiet. He really didn't speak at all. He was just blank," Dyson said.

Tyler spent the July 4 weekend drinking at Jersey shore bars with Manase Acheantong.

"We went out. We had drinks. He was a normal kid. He didn't start no fights. He didn't seem crazy," said Acheantong, 25, of Old Bridge.

Pathmark's parent company, Montvale-based Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., said the company was "deeply saddened" by the shooting and was cooperating with investigators.

LoBrutto and Breen both graduated from Old Bridge School. LoBrutto was a horn player in the school band and graduated this year, Schools Superintendent Timothy Brennan said. Breen graduated in 2006.

Jessica Ruano knew LoBrutto from school. "She was a really bubbly girl," said Ruano, 16. "She was silly. She was sweet."

SJFD keeps vigil over hospitalized firefighter; church relocates services

SAN JOSE -- Members of the San Jose Fire Department continues to keep vigil over a hospitalized firefighter who suffered a heart attack Thursday while fighting a downtown church fire, while the parish staff scramble to keep services going for worshippers.

Frank Ryan, a 15-year veteran of the department, remains in critical but stable condition at Regional Medical Center of San Jose after undergoing emergency surgery. Fire Capt. Mary Gutierrez said she and her colleagues have coordinated to keep a constant presence at the hospital.

"A lot of us are taking turns at the hospital," Gutierrez said, adding that Ryan's family has been at his side.

According to the fire department, Ryan collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest while fighting a fast-moving three-alarm fire at St. Patrick's Cathedral on East Santa Clara and Eighth streets around noon Thursday. The blaze filled the Catholic church with thick black smoke and flushed parishioners and students in the adjacent parochial school outside, but none were injured.

Meanwhile, the Diocese of San Jose has made arrangements for St. Patrick's worshippers to attend services at a series of alternate sites. Diocese spokeswoman Bernie Luongo Hoye said it's not known how long the cathedral will be closed.

Services will be held as follows:
