Laurette & Emile - Digital Scrapbook Place Gallery

This is a little story about my mom and dad as their lives were seen through my eyes and things they said.

Text reads: Theirs was not a love story filled with romance. Both were from little towns in Quebec. She wanted security and thought he was handsome. He figured it was time to settle down and he liked her red hair. She was 19 and he was 33.

Their life wasn?t easy nor without challenges. In the beginning, she took care of the in-laws and her own growing family while he went out working in the lumber industry, sometimes gone for months. After the in-laws passed, they moved quite a bit, following his job when possible. He took opportunities to travel solo on assignments, even ending up in the Congo for a while. She would cope as best she could working in the sewing industry and caring for their children. They had six children in all with a 20 year age gap.

They were married over 50 years when he passed away. In the later years he developed Alzheimers. She cared for him as long as she could at home but he had to move into a nursing home when she could do no more. He was placed in one that was within walking distance from their apartment so she walked there almost every day to visit and make sure he was cared for properly.

I remember a story my father told me about his wedding day. He said he arrived late at the church and found the side doors locked. He ran from the side to the back, knocking on the doors, trying to get someone to open them. Then he said something that stuck with me. He said he was afraid that she had changed her mind about marrying him. He didn?t want to loose her because he loved her.
