UCF elective courses offer adventure, musical style - News - Central ...

There is more to college than labs and textbooks; UCF now offers many nontraditional classes.

Students can take a course in Fantasy Football by registering for course code ENC 3375. It allows them to work on their football skills and play in a class league. But don?t stop there, you can also work on your physique in personal fitness
or channel your inner yogi and take a course in yoga, PEM 2121C.

College courses don?t have to be all be academic. Imagine taking a course in advancing your outdoor living skills, canoeing, kayaking, rock-climbing, hiking and backpacking. Adventure recreation class allows you to take part in all those activities.

This semester there?s an opportunity for students to enhance their swing on the courts. Beginner?s tennis is offered as a 2-credit-hour course.

?The concept of the class is to introduce students that don?t have any experience in tennis to [do] something different, understand the rules and be able to enjoy the sport of tennis while having fun. Tennis can be played in a serious or recreational fashion; tennis is what you make out of it,? said Jordan Kindervater, class instructor and men?s tennis assistant coach.

Remember, college is a time to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Maybe you?re not graduating summa cum laude, but there?s still time to graduate at the top of your dance class. There?s no need to graduate with two left feet; whatever your dance style is, UCF offers a class to help you perfect your skills.

From ballroom dancing to country/western dance, there?s something for everyone. Learn to merengue, bachata and cha-cha in the salsa & latin dance class, DAA 2351, but don?t drag your feet because this class fills up quickly.

Alexa Foote, a senior psychology major, said she took the class because she thought it?d be an easy A to boost her GPA.

?It [salsa & latin dance] was a large class and I enjoyed meeting new people," Foote said. "Every day you had a different partner so I got the chance to work with a lot of people. I learned a lot of Spanish dances and our final consisted of performing a Hispanic dance.?

Many students need additional classes to fill their schedule and others may need one more additional
credit before walking across the stage. Although these courses may not be within your major, it?s never
a bad idea to learn how to protect yourself in the self defense for women and men class or give back to
the community in a focused volunteer community service course.

Self defense for women and men teaches participants basic defense skills, sure to work on any intruder. And the focused volunteer community service class will allow students to participate in volunteer activities and reflect upon the value of those experiences at the conclusion of the semester.

Maybe you?re already a shining star or you want to take a semester to learn how to carry a tune. Either way, women?s chorus (MUN 3323) will help you perform music suited for women?s voices.

Or is musical theater more your style? Theatre survey allows students to learn about various forms of theater and learn to value the art of acting.

Sarah Girma, a junior radio/television and exercise science double major said ?The theatre survey class is a very interactive course. Whether you are interested in theater or not, you will gain appreciation for the arts. It?s a fun environment and it teaches you various aspects of theater. You learn what goes on onstage and behind the scenes.?

Unorthodox classes can be fun and spice up your schedule, and many students take advantage of these outside-the-box electives to boost their GPAs or simply break out of the doldrums of a heavy course load.
